i've been fixing up an old laptop to use when out taking photos, i'm just stuck at the replacing screen phase.
i've got a new screen cable which says CN-01Y284 -12961-38J-M181 and on the sticker where it connects to the laptop gpu it says BDW00 15" U.SXGA

now the confusion is do i get a SXGA or SXGA+ screen? as when i look up the part number of the cable, some sites say SXGA+ and some SXGA, which is it? and what does the U. mean?

It shouldn't matter; as long as it's a dual-channel cable then it can support up to 1200p.

Best check is to pen down the stickers on the back of the lcd and look up that panel. Can also make a photo of the cable at the lcd-connector end as that will show whether it is a fully-populated cable or one that has a dozen or so of its wires left out (saving cost for single-channel systems). You may have to peel back a bit of the wrapping in case it is not made of transparent tape.
