This is an approximate mirror of a thread I have on Tech|Inferno, here. No replies after most of a full day; I'm a little more impatient than that, even on web forums (I'm used to responses within a ~6hr window) so I thought I'd try here.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude e4310. It has 4gb RAM and an i5-540M CPU. I have a non-game application (FaceRig) I'd like to run and that laptop, despite being the best box in the house, is insufficiently graphical. Hence, the idea to do eGPU stuff.

I've never done this before, and I know I'm getting into a potential hornet's nest. But my mother didn't raise a moron ;) I know I can do this, it's just a question of how hard...

My budget right now is... about $20. I can borrow a few additional bucks from a friend, as well, if I have to. It does help that I have the graphics card I want to use (eVGA e-GeForce 7950) and I *think* it works. I'll know for sure this coming Thursday evening.

I know I can get this adapter and this riser -- although I have this other riser which potentially could replace the first one, if the additional power cabling it provides is not necessary, and if it can be secured to not cause shorts. I have a number of power supplies... I'll have to check the watt rating but I *think* my "Allied" brand (came with an "Apex" case) 200W SFX12V supply will do. If not, I have others ;)

Can anyone tell me if that setup will potentially work (adapter plus which riser plus what software equals probable success)...? I really don't like the idea of paying $60+ for this, mostly because that isn't going to happen -- I have a very strict $50 disposable income per month, and I never manage to save up month-to-month...

Continuing to write to write-only memory here...

Card is now tested, known good.

Getting good help in the other thread... I think.

Anyway, this thread is somewhat redundant, now, so...
