I have a Dell Precision M4800 i7 notebook. I want to hook up two external monitors (no gaming, just use as a digital audio workstation or DAW). The Dell has an HDMI port, a VGA, and an E/SATA USB port.

The Dell's HDMI port will supply one monitor, but I'm wondering how to supply the the other monitor. Now the second monitor I want to use only has a D-sub and DVI port, so my first guess was the Dell's VGA to the monitor's DVI port using an adapter, but my guess is the resolution will be limited to 640 X 480, although I'd be grateful for confirmation of this.

In any event, I know I can hook up on monitor at high resolution using the HDMI, but I'm wondering what is the best way to go about hooking up the second monitor for the best resolution. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Hmmm... I just discovered my Dell also has a display port. So I guess the best resolution would be display port out to a DP to DVI adapter.

Check if your display uses Digital or Analogic DVI, because a passive converter wont go from DP to DVI-A

You are right - last option would be best. If your monitors can support it, best option would be HDMI and DP. Up until the most recent iterations of HDMI, DP supported higher resolutions and refresh rates than HDMI. Senso is right about DVI-A - there is a real possibility that your monitor's inputs are only analog. What is the resolution of the second monitor? You might need to get a second monitor. Fortunately, they are fairly cheap - especially if you are not pushing resolution or refresh rate. :)

Thanks for the replies. I ordered and received a Viewsonic VX2257-MHD and have it connected using HDMI. It looks fine and will serve its purpose as a DAW (digital audio workstation) monitor. I now need a second one and will look for one with a display port.
