Hey all! Lately I've been looking into getting a portable display for various uses. Then I thought about my old M17x R1, which I no longer own. It was a perfectly capable laptop for everything other than gaming and could be used as a display. That was great when I was in the military since it doubled as a TV when necessary.

I googled around but saw a lot of mixed answers. Is there a list or should we make one?

So far I've found, and correct me if I'm wrong, these laptops:
    Clevo X8100
    Alienware M17x R1 and R2 (I can't confirm R3, R4, etc)
    Alienware M18x R1 (I can't confirm R2)

I remember the M17x R2 having a VERY nice screen, so maybe that will be one I hunt down. I'm surprised those hold decent values on eBay still.

The M17X R1/R2 do not have HDMI input, only output. The R3 and R4 do though.

The M17x R1 certainly does. I owned one for several years and it was my primary TV for quite some time.

Seems strange that the R1 has it and the R2 doesn't, since the chassis are pretty much identical.

I could be mistaken... I don't think I owned an R3 or R4 so now I'm questioning all my memories :p

I found a list after some searching: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/alienware-model-with-hdmi-in.782602/page-2

Let's back up a bit since naming schemes since to be confused with any people...

Alienware M17x R1 refers to the very old Core 2 Quad (2009) system
Alienware 17 R1 refers to the haswell (2013) core i based system

As far as I remember M17xR1 and M17xR2 did NOT have HDMI IN. @Raidriar can confirm if this is true.

Confirmed laptops to my knowledge that have HDMI IN:

    Alienware:

    M17xR3 (2011)
    M17xR4 (2012)
    17 R1 (2013)
    M18x (2011)
    M18xR2 (2012)
    18 (2013)

    Clevo:

    X8100
    X7200

    I've owned M17xR3, M17xR4, 17 R1, M18x, M18xR2, 18 so I can confirm those have HDMI IN.

Maybe the m17x R1 had a TV tuner card?

Oh! You're right! You jogged my memory. I had an express card tv tuner. Now I remember many hours of trouble shooting that stupid card to get it right :p
