    ok,so i officially declare-
"if you want OS X -take MBP"
"if you want Windows -take Dell XPS 1530"
    what do you think,General?

Yup, I think that would be a good, concise summary.

Those work well, but since you won't be playing games, they may be overkill.

I would also suggest looking at the Sony Vaio FZ, Dell Inspiron 1525, HP Pavilion dv6700t/z/tse, Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 and Toshiba Satellite A200.

Thank you all very much for your advice. As a novice buyer and computer idiot...this has helped tremendously.

So I think I've narrowed it down between:

the MBP (is there a reason that I should get the pro air? Is that only about looks or is it a better computer than just the MBP?)
    vs.
    the Dell xps1530.

In looking for sales now, I've noticed that there aren't a lot of Dell xps1530 for sale (used anyway.) But I've seen quite a few MBPs. Does that tell me something about the quality or am I reading too much into it?

Also-someone else suggested an Asus or an Acer if I wanted a good quality machine for less price? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much to everyone for your help!

oops. I forgot to add, I've noticed there are quite a few for sale on the "buy, sell, trade" forum here. Should I check into those?

The Air is not the pro....its a 13.3" ultraslim laptop that competes against the Sony Vaio SZ, and Lenovo Thinkpad X300...it lacks performance for the price.

A good quality machine for a lower price would be the ASUS M51sn, or the Sager NP2092...both are available at xoticpc.com and can be configured for good prices.

my ifl90 from compal (bought it from ava direct) works well for this, though i wished i would have gone with a 17'' screen (compal doesn't make one)
i copy home movies and write them to dvd's all of the time. it's fast, works well and have had no troubles since it arrived. i used to do all of that on my desktop, but since it came i haven't used it...at all. i am actually thinking of getting another one cause the wife and kids are on it all the time and i end up doing all of my work at night after their bedtimes. plus it's only 1500 well put together so you can save the 5oo left over and buy a new camcorder.

good luck and happy hunting...i looked for three months before i bought this so be comfortable with what you think you are getting before you decide.

I know you narrowed it down to XPS1530 for windows based, before you do that make sure you see one in person the screen is very reflective. If you are using it for pictures and movies the most important thing is the screen quality.
