I made this acct to reply to this very helpful thread. I came into possession of a hand-me-down c700 with: celeron 1.7ghz cpu 1GB (2x500mb) DDR2 200pin ram 80 gb hdd Vista Basic 32-bit F.9 BIOS It could barely run, and was pretty much unusable, even as a netbook, in the state that I got it in. Was able to successfully upgrade to: Core 2 duo T9300 2.5ghz 5GB (1x1gb , 1x4gb) DDR2 200pin 800mhz ram external 250gb hdd (330gb total) Windows 7 pro 64 bit (windows 10 free upgrade soon) F.35 BIOS I still plan on replacing the hard-drive to the 250gb samsung ssd for even more of a speed increase, but for now it runs much much better, night and day difference. It was slightly tough to find the 1x4gb ddr2 but it was worth it (found it on ebay for 50 bucks). I found that anything more that 1gb in the primary ram slot causes errors so I was able to find the 4gb in 1 chip to get it to 5gb, which is prob the max for this laptop.
