    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
    No optical drive is needed.

I'm basically looking for a low-cost companion to my MacBook Pro. Nothing fancy, just something a little more portable than my 17-inch beast.

not sure if you would call it low cost ... you never specified budget but my favorite is the X230 for its battery life and storage ability... and about 20% faster than your 17" on the CPU

I actually wouldn't mind having an X230. But yeah, definitely a bit too much. By the way, are you using an MCE OptiBay in your 17-inch MBP or Other World Computing Data Doubler? I picked up a cheap eBay optibay and it doesn't work.

in using a decent optibay adaptor from a thinkpad actually. OWC's offerings never excited me too much normally. as for the e-bay one it should work as long as your sata connections are good, its a standard interface the only fun is the fact we're dealing with a slotload and dont have a tray opening.
