    Hello,
Can anyone help me identify the PCI 4 slot for the SSD?
I also have the service manual and they just show the location of the slots and state that 2 of them are SATA/pcie compatible and 2 are only pcie compatible.
There are 3 SSD slots in a row close to each other and one separate which is only SATA.
I suspect the PCI 4 is one of the 3 close together but which one? :)

Also if I put a pcie ssd in a SATA port it wouldn t show up right? Nothing would get broken?

    Thanks.

Right the Bottom 2 M.2 slots where there are 3 m.2 slots are PCI-E gen 3 and SATA the top m.2 slot in that bunch is just PCIE gen 3. The 4th M.2 slot is on the other side just beneath the fan.

If this is a X170KM its only active if an 11th gen CPU is installed as its PCIE gen 4 only.

If however you have a X170SM the 4th M.2 is SATA only and is in the same location.

Nothing breaks if you put them in the wrong slot.

https://ibb.co/crbjbMJ - this is the mainboard scheme with the m2 ports

thank you all for the answers, however...

    I think
this one is the PCI 4 slot
Here is an image of the mainboard from the service manual.
are you sure? Isn't it the other way around? The top one I think is the one i'm looking for, the PCI gen 4 slot, according to the image above, since number 7 is SATA only and number 6 are 2 SATA/PCIe slots.

And yes, this is a X170KM-G with an 11gen intel processor.
So If I had a 10gen processor I wouldn't be able to use this slot?

I am sure as in mine i have two SATA's on the bottom two of the bunch of 3 and an NVME PCI-E SSD in the top.

The one i class top for PCIE only is the one next to the USB port, the ones below are PCIE/SATA

as @MD9787 rightly pointed out the board in the picture is the SM not the KM.

Your manual will have all the details on what the slots can do if doubt ;)

Yes guys, you are right, thanks for the answers.

So to sum it up and avoid confusion...
Number 7 highlighted in my picture above is the M2 SSD PCI GEN 4 slot right?
    https://ibb.co/crbjbMJ

and yes, the picture above is from an SM board, but the whole service manual is for the KM, it is a mistake, they didn't replace the screenshots, probably because the 2 models are so similar.

Actually, no, the manual doesn't tell you **** about upgrading and changing hardware, only the service manuals do this :).

Just out of curiosity, if you buy it with a gen 10 intel what would that slot be? only SATA, only PCI gen 3? :)
