Not to bring politics into the discussion but the VAT is one of the points Trump was arguing during the campaign.

VAT is an European tax and Trump doesn't have power over European tax decisions :D

VAT is not an import tax

    Edit
Italian government doesn't ask import taxes for laptops from USA, Canada or China but I think this is a common european policy

He wasn't arguing about value added taxes in general. He was arguing the fact that they charge a higher tax for imported products which in turn hurts the US's trade margin.

His argument was that maybe the US should start doing the same thing to help American owned and operated businesses.

What I find funny is the fact that when the countries within the EU put the VAT in place, they pitched it as a tax to the sellers and not the buyers. While this is true and the seller is responsible for paying the tax, the snake politicians all along knew for a fact that the sellers would just jack the prices up to counter the VAT. This is why goods cost more money in Europe.

European customers pay VAT over all goods (european production, us production or other). I pay that 20% of VAT when I buy a FIAT made in Italy and also pay 20% of VAT if I buy a CADILLAC made in USA. VAT is not an import tax

Depending on which European country you live in, the VAT is going to be different. I believe some European countries charge the individual a customs and excise fee on top of the VAT if you purchase something from another country.

Sellers charge that VAT over final price for customrrs and when sellers sell those goods and have moneys from customer, they use same moneys for paying VAT

Don't you find a 20% sales tax a little over board?

    I guess I just think it's absurd because I'm not used to it. I couldn't imagine paying a $400 tax on a laptop I purchased for 2k.
