Hello, I come from Germany and in 2017 I bought an XMG U717 Ultimate from Schenker for about 5000 € (Clevo P775DM3-G, BIOS 1.06.11, EC 1.06.06, with 6700K, GTX1080, 64 MB RAM, 2x512 GB NVMe Samsung 951, 2x 2TB SSD SanDisk, AUO 2550x1440, 120Hz, G-Sync). This was necessary because I had bought the U727 shortly before, but it became outdated very quickly (GTX 980 -> GTX 1080). The U717 was praised for being up-to-date and for being able to upgrade often. In 2021 this will no longer be possible, since the only "normal" option is to change the 6700K with a 7700K, which is not worthwhile.

There are upgrade kits from various resellers, e.g. for RTX, which ones are they, what do they cost? I've seen a couple of threads pointing to listings on eBay here. The barebones are then identical. When I asked Schenker aka bestware, they said I had to buy a completely new laptop, which I can't imagine.

Dsanke BIOS allows you to upgrade up to 9900k and rtx 2080 (super?)

Its just a matter of finding the components and understanding the process

Wow is that all? Just buy this kit, flsh the processor, flash the BIOS from dsanke and you're done? That sounds good, thank you very much for your suggestions and also thanks for the BIOS. I found instructions, it sounds complicated, I will read it in and call for help if necessary.

Are there any ideas among the pros as to where I can buy the processor cheaply? I would also have a 6700K and a GTX 1080 to sell.

IMO for significant upgrade you need a 2080S which is rare to find. Upgrade the cpu first, it takes no fuss, and wait to see if you can find 2080S. 2080 is also great, but with 150W on FHD screen it is moderate upgrade comparte to your 190W 1080 for few hundred euros. If it does not matter you can go with 2080. 2070 is similar to you 1080 w/o rtx.

for rtx you need to mod the heatsink or buy a new one. I bough mine from german clevo-computer.

Keep in mind the pc components are inflated due to short supply and high demand.

I would probably look for a used chip with a seller that is willing to show it with a time stamp either locally or from a reasonable source online and hold on to your 6700k until you have confidence in the replacement.

2080 super is out there but seemingly difficult to find, I have only seen one user here display it and I believe they said it was in the 1300 usd price range.

2080 is much easier to source but not as compelling as I believe it can't be modded like 10xx can be.

You can roam the forum for feedback on others' experience with the upgrades. 9900k requires some love as it runs pretty warm. Some were happy with 8700k or 9700k. I myself am running a 9700F in my p750dm mother board

I'll link my reseller here, maybe he can make a specific suggestion, maybe a trade-in for the old card is also possible @XMG
