    Greetings guys.

First, I'd like to start by saying that the budget is retty firm; ie. no urging to increase funds :p

I want to buy a cheap laptop for now, and maybe later I will get a high-end one.

I was looking at used ThinkPads. I read that thier speakers suck though, so I am kind of at a stuck point.

I want to listen to audio, browse the web, general student-like tasks (typing papers, hence the ThinkPad keyboard would be a plus, e-mail via Outlook, so on) and some CS:S thrown in the mix won't hurt either :)

    What would you guys get?

You should fill out the FAQ, for $400 if you want new notebook, you could get with celeronM processor, or maybe with Pentium DualCore if you're lucky.
Used Thinkpad T43 is great option too. It's one of the best notebooks in the past(centrino dothan).

Hmm...can't seem to access HPs website :(

Care to post the specs? Greatly appreciated :)

I was considering a T41 - T43, seems like they were just really solid units. Only thing that bothers me is speakers.

I was also looking at the X31 and X40.

I would get an IPod Touch. Internet access, music playing, all it's missing is a word processor.

Yes, t43 only has single speaker...cmiiw. Attach a set of external speaker will help. But it offers excellent build quality and top notch keyboard. It's one of the best selling used notebooks in my country.

Wouldn't Vista pretty much kill that poor little creature :)

Regarding that NC8230, there is a BIN option at $499. Wouldn't that deter bidders, since they would want to get it cheaper than the BIN?

if you upgraded the ram, it should be fine.

i still think the would go for around $450, but you can give it a try.

Would it be a good deal at that price, do you think?

    Compare to:
    Thinkpad T41
    Pentium M 1.6GHz
    512MB RAM
    14.1" SXGA

    for $400 even, BIN.

Personally, I think the HP would blow it away...

What of this R50p? It is a bit out of budget, however...

    Pentium M 1.7 GHz
    2 GB RAM
    60GB 7.2k HD
    FireGL T2 (like a 9600)
    15" UXGA Flexview (IPS?)

That one can probably be had for $640...too much :(

The HP's bidding ends in less than 2 hours.

You can always wait to see how it goes.

    Indeed.

But is it a good deal at that price?

It ended up being too much.

Well what kind of notebook do you want? If you want an ultraportable then you have to buy a used one, or the eee. If you want a cheap 15.4, you can get a new one for that price (+ a printer if i recall) at BB.
