I just received a replacement keyboard for my CF-29.

When I went to change it out I remembered that the original was backlit (there is a metal cover on the back) and has three cables whereas the replacement has only two cables and no back cover.

Is the backlighting in that metal cover and may I transfer it? Or am I out of luck on the backlit feature?

It will be good to be able to read my keys again but I liked the rarely-used but occasionally-valuable backlit feature.

    Thanks!

Some BL KB's have 2 ffc's and some have 3. I replaced my rubber backit kb: the old one had 3 ffc's and the new one had 2.

And, no, I dont' think you can swap the backlight. My old BL Rubber KB had a PCB back, and the new one has a metal back/frame. The lights are built into the structure and design of the KB's.

    Sorry, and good luck!

If that is a rubber keyboard with only two cable, most probably it came from CF-28. It will work though but you need an special keyboard plastic strip in front of it as the standard one has no extended race way to holdup/cover up the keyboard itself. The standard one will be fine but you need a double sided tape to hold the keyboard inplace.

    Out of luck.

I've never heard of anyone doing what you asked.

I have an idea that I don't have time for.

    Steady hand.
Paint the keys. Using the stencil take off the paint until just white is showing. Repeat for each key painted.

Meanwhile keep your eye out for a real backlit keyboard.:)

You could do as ador described, or just go ahead and freehand (negative) paint the keys.
    Might look cool.
    Might look like manure.
But it would be unique either way.

I'm curious about the stencil. Does that make the letter of the keys very obvious?

You can't swap in the illuminated base to a non-illuminated board... It just wouldn't work. You do have options though...

I have seen other make laptops where people have modded in LEDs into the lid to shine down onto the keyboard. I'd bet you culd fab up a switch for it as well.

Hallo, let me use this thread for my question.
On my CF29 Mk2 for back light keyboard I find 4 levels of light. With Fn-key and F12.
But, is it possible to switch-off the light completely?

No. But they don't draw much power.
