The later mks of the CF-19s and CF-31s have half plastic hard drive caddies. I would be interested to know if this is a design improvement or a cost cutting measure.

The design seems pretty much the same - other than the half plastic caddies don't have any screws to retain the docking connector.

I would have thought that all metal would dissipate heat better than half plastic.

    Any thoughts?

    Metal will dissipate heat better.
But, the HDD or SSD is "mounted" in foam inside the metal so no real heat transfer is possible.
Slightly easier to swap a drive using a plastic caddy.
I imagine a plastic caddy could make less noise in high vibration situations.
I am guessing it was a cost / labor saving move.
