At work I use a HP ZBook G3 Studio. This laptop uses a fairly thin battery. Twice in the past year, I have had to get the battery replaced because it started swelling and caused either the laptop case to separate or the trackpad to rise.

Is this swelling problem a recent phenomenon? I never heard of this problem before a year ago, but apparently it's pretty common.

I have an HP ZBook G2 that I bought for personal use. It uses a different, thicker battery than the ZBook G3 Studio. Is it possible for my ZBook G2's battery to start swelling? It's 5 years old and so far it hasn't had any problems (knock on wood).
