    I know you said Windows, but what does her school uses, if the school is all mac, then considering a macbook might not be a bad idea.

    good point, but she specifically told me Win8 (first choice) or Win7 (second choice). Weird, I know.

    If she wanted a macbook, her buying options of course would be infinitely easier.

    however, because of her study area, I would like to avoid TN panels, no matter how good. I'll still check out your rec, thanks!

    This sounds kinda dumb, but TN/IPS panels are somewhat irrelevant for photo editing. What you want is good contrast (the Y510p above has 700:1), blackness, gamut and resolution (1080p).

    IPS displays are rare at your price point. The Y510p display is a really good one in terms of color accuracy and gamut.

    Ironically, the Acer V7-482PG has an IPS display for around the same price. but has a contrast ratio of 1:245, versus 1:700 for the Y510p. Would you rather have good viewing angles with flat colors or bad viewing angles with great colors?
