    1) What is your budget?
    $1000 (+/-200)

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

    c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
    d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen

    3) Where will you buying this notebook?
    India

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    a. Like: Apple, HP, Dell
    b. Dislike: Asus, Lenovo
    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
    No

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
    Writing, media playback, multitab browsing, large and image centric PDF files, general office work

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
    Yes to both. Usually colleges and libraries.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
    Not likely. Perhaps really old ones like Call of Duty or Age of Empires. I've got a desktop for handling games.

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
    8+ at least.

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
    Online from Amazon or similar is okay.

    11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
    OS agnostic.

    Screen Specifics

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
    Between 1366*768 and 1920*1080

    Build Quality and Design

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
    Somewhat, since this will end up on the Teacher's desk in a college.

    15) When are you buying this laptop?
    Immediately!

    16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
    At least 3 years.
    Notebook Components

    17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
    SSD preferable. 128 gigs should do. I have external HDD for the rest.

    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
    Nope, no moving parts if possible.

    Just to clarify, I'm looking at alternatives of the Apple Macbook Air.

    Have you looked at the XPS 13 or it's enterprise class counterpart? They seem to fit what you need especially as a MacBook Air alternative.

    Thanks Dansauce . The XPS 13 range looks attractive but there seems to be some pricing issues in India. The price of the lowest Xps is 30k more ($400 more) so they're at par with the Macbook Pro range. Importing may be an option but I'd rather have domestic shipping. :'(
