BGA on desktop has been a thing for years in SFF and embedded systems.

The thing in the OP looks like someone took the effort to convert a BGA CPU to LGA. @Mr. Fox wipes away a tear.

Yup, the BGA filth has been creeping into the desktop space for a while now and I have even posted about it before. If there are people stupid enough to buy BGA laptop filth, we know with certainty that there are going to be people that are equally stupid when it comes to desktops. Probably even safe to say that stupidity defines the majority. I fully expect this technology brain cancer to metastasize and spread and become worse over time. It will be labeled "progress" and there will be no shortage of retarded Kool-Aid drinkers.

It is a nice technical stunt. I do admit that. Not that it was a desirable thing, but impressive to the extent that it actually worked.

Checking TaoBao, it seems that you can purchase an unlocked 4980HQ for ~$100. Compare this to the ~you'd be paying for a used 4790K and tbh thats a bargain deal. Either way, Haswell is expensive to buy into

If performance is not that important you could save a few bucks going that route. A 4980HQ running stock does not perform as well as a 4790K, and it's only partially unlocked with functional limitations on top of that. Once you commence to overclocking the 4790K, it totally obliterates the 4980HQ's performance. But, this is status quo for BGA and expecting otherwise would be unrealistic. And, it is still cool in geeky way that they pulled it off whether it is desirable or not.

None should support buying BGA in any way, shape, or form! Only exception... toys, wifi routers, tablets, laptops below 13-14 "size, smartphones etc. Don't support the Devil!

4980HQs also work with PGA adapters on laptops.

Was considering a T440p with one of those since it has the Iris iGPU (similar or outperforms the GT 730 with less fuss), but couldn't find a good enough deal.

In terms of overclocking for daily use, it'll probably reach the same clockspeed or just a hair lower than normal 4790K. Given that the 4980HQ is a very highly binned chip.

In terms of practicality? Just get a 4790K.

However, this would make a neat HTPC chip because of the iGPU IMO
