You could try with CINEBENCH R15 equal as I tested in ESET NOD32/Internet Security thread. Test first without Anti virus then fire up your AV + a few Chrome webpages running in the background and then run Cinebench R15 once again. See if you can get about same results as first time without being hit too hard. Post before and after results with pict.

Windows Defender has an "annoyance" that was never fixed since Win8; create a folder with lot of executables/installers, opening the said folder will show a big slowdown in displaying the exes.

Still has that issue. It scans new folders when you open them.

yes but it doesn't even offer the choice to scan on-execution or on-modification.

Yes my software folder which contains many folders with custom icons and even the EXEs all have white icons when I first access them if I had Windows Defender enabled. They load in slow motion despite my having an SSD and a fast CPU

Because WD scan all the time and submit to the cloud...ridiculous not to offer other scan options. It is why WD will always be subpar the others.

WD is baseline AV, if they improve and add features like 3rd party AVs then 3rd party AVs will lose most of their business and research work.
WD scans them based on recent-modification date.
