What key do I have to press to boot into the restore partition? I want to restore to factory settings.

    F9 didn't seem to work.

Also would I need to enter the Windows 8 serial if I factory restore the OS? ( don't see any key on the sticker ).

The factory key is stored within the BIOS and automatically loaded during an install. If you just want to go back to factory settings, can't you just use "Refresh your PC" setting?

I get a BSOD during boot so it's stuck in a restarting loop, meaning can't get into Windows ( your pc ran into a problem that it couldn't handle... )

So is there any way to restore the OS without booting into windows?

Shift F8 goes straight into BIOS. No good.

    I have the same problem.
Got a UX31A upgraded to Windows 8, but want to revert back to factory setup.
There is a 10gb recovery partition that is hidden.
On the ASUS website it says to press F9 to begin the EMS Recovery procedure.
All F9 does it go in to the Windows 8 Recovery Console.

And the recovery console doesn't have a menu option to get to the Asus recovery process? When you press F9 to access the recovery, do you need to hold down the FN key as well?

Spam F9 during boot up - if you're not already - until you get the recovery option. If you press it once or twice, you might miss the timing.

You may need to try using recovery DVDs if you made any.

I'm not trying to install Windows 7.

F9 does not go into Recovery Mode, neither does SHIFT F8.

    Nice os Microsoft.

Did you make Recovery DVDs? Because this is important and would save you a lot of trouble. If not, you can choose to call ASUS and obtain a copy.
The other alternate is going to be hard to do, it's not impossible but difficult, assuming the hard drive doesn't have any bad sectors and its recovery partition is still accessible.
Using a WinPE USB flash drive, you can extract the WIM file from the recovery partition, and deploy it using IMAGEX utility onto HDD, which has the same purpose of recovery.

I guess you will have to contact ASUS for it too.
Supposedly, recovery DVD discs should be made before performing the OS upgrade since it can disable the existing recovery mechanism.
