Neither have backlit keyboards, my guess is to save battery life or to separate it from other asus models. I bought the ul80vt because I like smaller laptops. I actually would have preffered a ul30 or ul20vt but those aren't out and there's no guarantee that they ever will be.

Smaller laptops usually have smaller screens and thus more battery life and since part of my job involves sitting on a tour bus for a good portion of the day I value battery life very highly.

Other than the hard drive size, 320 gb for ul80 and 500 gb for the ul50 the differences seem to be mostly related to size and appearance. The Ul50 has a number pad and the ul80 does not since it is smaller, I personally don't need a num pad.

It seems like the biggest appeal of the UL80 and UL50 in their vt version is the switchable graphics with a dedicated nvidia 210 combined with a low volt but still quite powerful dual core processor to allow for incredible battery life and at least the ability to play the latest pc games fluently at low settings or potentially even med-high depending on the game and just how well the 210 + culv processor actually perform. This makes the laptop a potential boon for gamers who need more than a couple hours of gaming on the go.

Personally, I don't quite understand why anyone would buy the UL50 as it seems bigger and therefore less portable and the whole point here is portability. If you're not using this laptop for the battery life+performance then you might as well get something else that either performs better or costs less.

I haven't heard much talk if any about people buying the ul50 and I'm guessing that model won't sell nearly as well as the ul80.
