    Hi everyone!

My old Asus F8SN's screen seems to have failed. When I boot up the notebook, the speakers signal that Windows is starting and I heard the HD spinning, etc. However, the screen is just black.

I would rush to the conclusion that the screen has died after around 5 years, but I would like to get some other opinions from NBR members.

Is there any way I can repair the screen myself? Can I use my notebook with an external monitor if the display panel doesn't work?

Or should I go straight to Asus servicing and get a replacement screen?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

SteelRods, YES try with an external monitor, that will tell us if the video card is still working.

Can you see anything on the screen if you put it in direct sunlight or shine a flashlight on it?

If the backlight is dead but the screen still shows an image it is likely the inverter (which is a ~$10 part). The CCFL bulbs (for the backlight) can also fail but that is less likely.

If it's the entire screen you can still replace it yourself. You'll need to get the screen bezel off in any case, and we can help you figure out how to do that.

Thanks for the replies guys! Sorry for the late reply too. I've been pretty busy lately.

I will try doing this. I'll try outputting through all the video output ports one of these days (S-VIDEO, VGA, and DVI). I'll let you know what the results are.

I have tried putting it in direct sunlight and shining a flashlight when booting my machine up. However, there is no image whatsoever. I will try outputting to an external screen and will update you guys on the results.

    Hey guys,

Just a short update. I've tried outputting to S-Video, DVI, and VGA and none worked. I have a feeling it is really the video card that is the problem now.

I can hear Windows boot up, as well as the fingerprint reader accepting the swipe and logging in. However, the screen is not showing anything.

Should I go ahead and send this to Asus? How much do you guys reckon a replacement screen would cost me?
