Assuming that hackintoshes are okay discussion here.

I'm in the market for a 'new' (just meaning new to me) laptop and i've wanted something that I can do an OSX install onto as well as windows. I've been researching Thinkpads and especially used for the money they look like a really nice option - they sound decently compatible, somewhat rugged, upgradeable and similar, at least through about the T440p or so. (which is the model I had in mind to look for)

I'm just wondering if I should be also looking at any other makers or models if those are my goals - affordable, good OSX compatibility (doesn't have to be to the newest, thru 10.12 and 10.13 at least), semi rugged, and upgradeable as I have the goal of putting 16gb, a quad core, a 1080p IPS screen upgrade on the T440p in mind. A partial interest in dual booting makes me prefer a win-based instead of the used apple educational laptops. Yet i'm curious in what other 'good choices' may exist including for the future when something newer is desirable.

I currently use a t440p and it more or less replaced my AW 13 R3 for a daily driver away from home.

The keyboard is great, touchpad is great (after replacing with t450 pad), can use 2133Mhz 16GB of ram, even works with the 4980hq cpu as well. I would recommend trying to find one of those at some point (4850hq/4870hq) not for the CPU speed but for the HD 5200 (Iris Pro). Should help keep things looking smooth for some time to come.

You can also naturally triple boot OSX / Win10 / Linux if desired. with the 57++ battery you can get 8+ hours easily. Its one of the few machines I can whole heartedly endorse for a second hand machine.

Dont have any personal experience with OSX on it yet though

There's an OS X on ThinkPads sub forum on ThinkPads.com.
