Recalls are fairly common. However the wide scope and depth of this series of recalls is pretty uncommon. People don't know whether the "shim" fix will fix this specific pedal problem, or if it's something electronic or not. The good thing is that all new Toyota models will be equipped with "smart pedal" software that cuts power to the engine if the system detects that both the brake and gas pedals are being used at the same time. Furthermore, selected models that have been recalled, will be getting this technology. It's not new, as other manufacturers have had this "smart pedal" tech for quite some time.

Hearing all this bad about the infallible Toyota makes me grin.

I'm going to get in my rusty old Taurus with no heat, drive home (if it starts) holding my door shut and hope the car doesn't break in half grinning that it's not an American company that did something wrong.

While every brand has had recalls, I'm just glad that for once Toyota isn't getting praise! Toyota has been doing recalls silently for years giving the impression that they are perfect.

I remember the Audi 5000 from the 1980s supposedly had the issue, but it was mainly caused by driver error (since the gas and brake pedals were unusually close to each other, and the fact that the brake pedal sat slightly lower than the gas pedal instead of much higher).

My family used to have a 1987 5000 S for 10 years and it never gave us that issue (it gave us plenty of other issues, though!)

I'm surprised that Toyota's suffering from this issue, though.
