Depending on how far over $3,000 USD this costs, it might be hard to justify purchasing the X5 MD v7 over the X5 v7. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the two is they've dropped in a 1080MQ instead of a 1070. Going from a 1070 to a 1080 on a desktop costs around $100 USD, but you get the full performance of each card in a desktop scenario. Here you're going to be thermally limited, and it'll be an excellent opportunity to see whether the 1080MQ is worth anything, or if it's matched by its 1070 equipped little brother due to both cards needing to fit in a small sized thermal envelope. If I had to bet on the end result right now, I would guess that the 1080MQ will come out ahead by a little in peak performance (both out of the box and after cooling tweaks). As long as the price premium for that option isn't extreme, I think it's a nice option to have.

All versions of the X5 v7 have Thunderbolt, and there's a version with a 4k Gsync screen. See some SKUs available for preorder here. The question is how much the X5 MD v7 will cost versus the 4k equipped X5 v7. But there are additional factors to consider. You'll be able to get the X5 v7 this month according to Aorus, whereas you'll need to wait longer for the X5 MD v7. Assuming that release estimate holds, you can either get the 1070 equipped version this month, or wait several months and pay more for what I'm guessing will turn out to have nothing more than a marginal GPU upgrade. When you consider that you can always spend time waiting for better tech, the X5 MD v7 is probably not worth waiting for. To anyone interested in some version of an X5, I would say either buy the 7820HK/1070 version this month, or if you're going to wait, sit a few more months past the release of the X5 MD and hold out for Coffee Lake/Volta equipped laptops. And not necessarily the X5 or even an Aorus unit, who knows what other worthwhile models there will be at that point.

To be clear, this isn't to say the X5 MD is a bad product. Once it's out, I actually think that as long as it's priced right with regard to its performance, it'll be an excellent complementary product, much like the current X7/X7 DT dynamic. It doesn't look like it requires an enormous investment to bring to market, since it seems to just be a drop in GPU upgrade, so in the future I would expect the X5 v8 and X5 MD v8 to release in tandem, as the X7 v7 and X7 DT v7 are going to be.

    https://www.windowscentral.com/gigabyte-aorus-x5-md-hands-gtx-1080-nvidia-max-q

"So just how much faster is the new model, with the Max-Q-equipped GTX 1080? Gigabyte claims a speed bump of around 15 percent compared to the X5 v7, with GTX 1070. That's impressive considering almost everything else appears to be the same, and a 15 percent improvement is enough to make a noticeable difference in frame rates."

What's the difference between the X5 V7 and the X5 MD apart from the GPU ?
