I want to ditch my Alienware 18 w/ SLI 880m setup for an Alienware or Razer 13" laptop w/ external graphics option. Anyone having significant success with this?

the Razer Blade Stealth's CPU bottlenecks any GPU above a 1050 - not worth using that one. You REALLY need a quad-core proper mobile CPU nowadays.

Yes the AW 13 would work a lot better with the AW GA.

I presume he meant Razer Blade (which is roughly equivalent to Alienware 13), not Stealth.

But that one runs much hotter, louder and already has a 1060, which defeats the purpose of eGPU as the 6700HQ and 7700HQ both bottleneck a 1070 or 1080 :D

7700HQ bottlenecks those cards? Perhaps in VGA resolutions, but I presume the OP had a realistic usecase in mind.

The bigger issue would be the penalty of running those things through TB3 and Intel drivers which might be up to 15-20%. Not sure if Alienware solution performs much better in this regard apart from having a bigger bandwidth.

Well, 6700HQ bottlenecks my 970M in certain games, I'd say it's a much bigger issue on a 1070.

That depends on the game and resolution, but any such bottleneck loss is probably less significant compared to the performance improvement which 1070 brings in theory over the similarly "bottlenecked" 1060 on the Razer Blade.

I say in theory as it's hard to find an in-depth review on these things which is what the OP is asking for. There are only users posting on forums. E.g.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...nware-graphic-amplifier-with-gtx-1080.792591/

It seems to be running pretty well there, but I've seen other tests where the losses were higher.
