Ive wanted a gaming laptop for some while now, also having a very good desktop i wanted to know if im downgrading in performance. Im willing to spend 5000-6000 on this m18x with the best options available, and my current desktop is Video Card: GTX 580 OCd Processor: Core i7 920 4.0GHz PSU: Corsair 750W HDD: VelociRaptor 300Gig Ram: G.SKILL DDR3 6Gig Monitor: Dell 24" IPS U2410 1920x1200 OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit.

Not sure how much a fully maxed out laptop compares to my desktop so any inputs are great, thanks.

Apart from the resolution, not really. Dual 6970M should give performance roughly equivalent to the GTX 580 or slightly below it.

    Hi Messier,

Just going through the same process here. I was able to compare by running 3DMark Vantage on my PC and comparing it to a 485M SLI or 6970CF. Here are the results :

    1. My PC with GTX480: GPU Score 21000
    2. 485M SLI : GPU Score 23082
    3. 6970 CF : GPU Score 20691

So as far as I am concerned, I should have about the same GPU power on the M18X. Knowing that you have a 580GTX, you might loose some power there.
Try running 3DMark and let us know.

I used for comparaison the 3DMark vantage scores found here : Review GeForce GTX 485M SLI vs. Radeon HD 6970M CF - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

overclock your 580 and yes its downgrading. if you arent gonna overclock then no. they will trade blows in games regarding fps but im sure the min framerate will be higher on a gtx 580, its brute force is unmatchable.

    2920xm overclocked will match/beat your 4ghz i7 nehalem.

to answer your question a fully maxed laptop will beat your desktop.

im in your position, i love alienware laptops because of their NBD warranty + build quality and support (bios/overclocking) (I've had 3 M17x). i know for a fact that if i lay 3g on a m18x i wont want it when the GTX 680 is out. especially when BF3/Skyrim release.

Hmmmm i did everything on the extreme settings 1920x1200 and got GPU score 12702 and CPU score 49508. Also compared it with ZTZ's link and got this 22042

    1. ZTZ with GTX480: GPU Score 21000
    2. Messier with GTX580: 22042
    3. 485M SLI : GPU Score 23082
    4. 6970 CF : GPU Score 20691

    It'll be a side-grade

    A 2720QM matches a stock Core i7 920, so a 2920XM would match well with your OC'd CPU

    A 6970M is basically a downclocked desktop 6850, and 6850CF matches/beats the GTX 580 stock

It really is impressive how fast technology on the notebook side can match desktops now..

Given the fact that most video games are console ports, it doesn't make much sense anymore to build a gaming desktop. An M18x will play games at max for a long time to come.

99% true, except for one BIG title : Battlefield 3 (developped 4 PC foremost)
This 1% is enough for me to justify not to lose any performance when going M18x :)

Ok, but even for PC developed games isn't desktop 6970 and 580 plenty of GPU horsepower? I'd say so unless you are driving a 30" monitor, and even then they do very well if you keep the AA reasonable.
