Tesla purchases $1.5 billion in bitcoin — Here’s what could happen next

Bitcoin’s price jumped sharply to an all-time high after Tesla revealed a big stake in the cryptocurrency and said it would start accepting payments in the digital coin for its products.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency popped 14% to $44180.3, for its best day since March, according to Coin Metrics. It hit an intraday record high of $44,762.4 after Tesla’s announcement. Bitcoin just finished a banner year with its price more than quadrupling in 2020.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla announced Monday that it bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin for “more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash.” It also said it may invest a future portion of its assets in digital assets and that it will accept bitcoin as payment for products “subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis.”

The move makes Tesla the first major automaker to accept bitcoin as payment.

I bet it's one of those Elon jokes. If he really bought 1.5B of bitcoin, the price would skyrocket before the announcement. But if he really managed it, then he just made 200M for free :D Either way, it's good to be Elon these days :)

Elon Musk Accused of Bitcoin Market Manipulation By Top Economist tomshardware.com

The basis of Roubini's accusations stems from Elon Musk's tweets. Roubini accuses Elon of using his Twitter platform to pump up the price.

"For somebody like Elon Musk, who knows he has the market impact to manipulate, first take an individual position in Bitcoin, pump the price up, and then say that Tesla has invested." Roubini said in an interview with CoinDesk.

"And Tesla doesn't make any money yet, it's also irresponsible, and it's market manipulation. The SEC should be looking into people that have a market impact, and that manipulate the price of assets. That's also criminal behavior" - Roubini in an interview with CoinDesk.

    Another Crypto Bubble?
Regardless of what really happened surrounding this transaction, it does appear we have found ourselves in another Crypto high. Mining, especially Ethereum is at an all-time high due to lavish profitability, which meanwhile is driving up the prices of graphics cards.

At the end of the day, it's gamers and individuals who buy crypto in these highs that lose.

Elon did pump up the hype, while expanding his customer base lol, but 1.5B is not actually that much for bitcoin. Anyway, will be interesting to see how all this plays out.

BTW some interesting comments from the SEC:

Bitcoin Breaks $50,000 Barrier, Hitting the Highest Value Ever
    techpowerup.com | Yesterday, 07:52

Cryptocurrency has in the past few years gained a lot of popularity, mostly fueled by Bitcoin's rapid growth and its massive price increasing over time. Today, Bitcoin, the world's leading cryptocurrency, has managed to make history and broke the record of 50,000 USD. As of now, on February 17th at 07:00 UTC, Bitcoin has reached 50,452.60 USD value. What is driving the price up you must wonder? It is the market adoption of the currency. Tesla Inc. has invested 1.5 billion USD in Bitcoin as it intends to accept it as payment for its products. Next up is Mastercard, which is preparing to support cryptocurrency on its network. In addition to Mastercard, Apple is also preparing its services for cryptocurrency payments. Right now, the market cap of Bitcoin is $935,359,977,182 at the time of writing, just shy of one trillion USD.

And the gamers will still need to wait (pay screwed up prices) for the newer cards until the mining race starts slow down.

One of the most striking examples of a speculative bubble in history. Bitcoin in particular is woefully inadequate as a payments system. Visa processes around 45000 transactions per second, the entire Bitcoin network can do like 20.
