    Hello,

i've upgraded my GPU in my Alienware m17x with an geforce gtx 880m. For the installation of the card i had to disable the audio and the internal graphics and there is the problem. After the driver installation for the 880m i tried to activate them both again but that gains some problem. If the internal graphics are activated my laptop freezes in the BIOS loading screen. And when the audio is enabled i get a white screen after the windows loading screen. Does some one have an idea to solve these problem?

    Best Regards

    >GTX 880m

    There's your problem.

The 880m is a piece of crap. It will only work in the laptop it came in. The card is very, very unstable, almost as if it was an ES CPU.

Should've bought the 780m. That thing works in everything.

Just trying to add some light here since you unfortunately made a bad purchase.

You HAVE to leave the intel disabled via the bios. The audio issue looked to me like a nightmare to fix but was possible with messing with the manufactures driver. This problem also happens with the 780m in the R3 so basically the least work and most chance of success is a 680m.

You still have to disable the iGPU and get a modified driver file but it's an upgrade that has been 100% successful in every case I've worked. The performance with a mild overclock is close to 780m performance and runs way cooler - even with an unlocked vbios at +210mhz and no voltage hike it never exceeds 69c. It spends most of it's time when gaming around 66c.

You may think I was just lucky to get a good one and I also was thinking this may be so, but only a few days ago I took a 680m owner through the overclocking and vbios update and his temps were 1c lower on average than mine!

If you have any way to return the 880m that is your best option I'm afraid

Edit: Forgot to add, check out posts from user j95, I've seen him post the audio fix but that was on a 780m....

The 880m is not a certified upgrade for the m17x R3 and issues may arise from using it on that platform. The issues you mention are commonly caused by what MickyD states. An unlocked BIOS could help you work around those issues but some others may come up afterwards.

I know I am a little late to the party but I've managed to get the GTX 880M working on a M17x R3. You just have to make sure using a unlocked BIOS and SG MUST BE SWITCHED TO PEG before you install the card. The system will not boot and you will be stuck on the splash "alien head" loading screen. The best fix if you encounter this problem after installing the card is to remove the card, enter BIOS and switch it to PEG. After installing it, it will boot completely fine. Just I haven't still managed to get SG "Switchable Graphics" to work correctly, so if you ever want to use the HDMI input, you are going to have to go to BIOS =>Advanced tab and select Video and disable special videos features. This will disable you the 880M and play from the integrated graphics "Intel".

If anyone has found a work around that allows the SG to work please let me know.
