Have run into an issue with my wife's Alienware m15. She has the 4k model with a Nvidia GTX 1060. Laptop runs great on all her games. No thermal problems that I can detect. However, when she has tried to use it with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive (yes, we've tried both) her frame rates are not nearly what mine are when I used my Alienware m15 that is identical other than the fact that I have the 1080p 144hz screen.

I have made sure her laptop is using the Nvidia card and not Intel when VR kicks in. It's set for maximum performance and she's playing VR games installed on her SSD.

Anyone else run into this issue or have a clue what's going on? I've got her Alienware running the latest updates/bios and am mystified. Thanks for any ideas and/or thoughts.

I have run into these symptoms and clean reinstalling latest Nvidia drivers solved it for me.

Thanks for the response, but I always clean install the latest drivers and it doesn't make a difference on her system.

What are your two specific model numbers?

It could be something as simple as hers has 1 x 16GB DDR4 and yours has 2 x 8GB DDR4, which both look like 16GB?

It could also be down to the OS configuration and background tasks. If there is something running on hers while the VR is going it could be hurting performance.

To be clear, I meant clean reinstalling using DDU from safe mode. Can you run 3dMark TimeSpy and post the score to confirm the issue is VR specific?

Got it. I'm a certified tech and gave her a totally clean install. Can confirm this is only a VR problem.

Can confirm our configs are identical except for the screen.

Then I'm not sure. The only other VR issues I've seen is stuttering due to the headset / sensors being plugged in to a hub, and stuttering that needed recalibration, sorry.

No worries. I appreciate the thoughts. Added backstory. A few months ago we both had same spec'd Razer Blades except she had the 4K screen and I didn't. Same issues with VR in that instance. I initially thought that somehow the screen res difference was coming into play, but that seemed insane since the image is being displayed in the headsets and not the screen. Just can't find anything else to explain this. Thanks again for everyone's time.

The screen resolution would have some impact if mirroring is enabled. While I've got no VR perf issues I can speak of even with a 4K screen, in some titles mirroring has noticeable impact so I just turn it off.

How are you confirming this? Other than a story void of any actual details; we're all going off your word here about the hardware and your problem remains unsolved...
