    Has anyone ever seen a "c++ runtime error" in regards to alienrespawn?

    I wish I would have taken a screen shot to show you the exact wording...

    Try updating to the latest .NET framework and see if that fixes it :)

    Sorry to bump an old thread but I recently had this same issue and found a fix (for me). What it is is AlienRespawn is attempting to update but cannot, a popup opens stating:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runetime Error!
    Program: ...iles (
    x86_/AlienRespawn/Components/DSUpdate/DSUpdate.exe
    abnormal program termination

    Now I checked whether my .net framework was up to date as someone had suggested and it was. So I decided to uninstall AlienRespawn as you would via add/remove programs in the control panel. I then downloaded the latest basic version of AlienRespawn from
    here

    The download link is on the right under "Easy Step 2". I installed, downloaded and attempted to update, no popup! Sorted!

    Have been getting the same Visual C++ messages on boot-up, followed Tom's method with Respawn, OK for a week or two but got the pop-up back on booting up today.

    I can't find how to check that .Net Framework is up-to-date, would be grateful for guidance :)

    A Windows Update probably broke your setup. That has happened to me a couple of times in the last month or two, so I have changed my Windows Update settings to be run manually only whenever I choose to check for updates.

    Run the .NET cleanup tool and select the option to remove all versions of .NET installed on your system and then reinstall .NET 4.0 on your system. You can download the cleanup tool from here. Download a fresh copy of the latest .NET 4.0 installer to your desktop to have it ready to go before you remove the old version.

    Thank you MrF, done that. Was a bit concerned when the clean-up tool rebooted but OK. Before clicking Finish on the DotNet installer I clicked Check for Updates and got told to check Windows updates, which I did and it said "9 important updates...". Installed them - they're ALL for DotNet Windows XP. So we'll see... :rolleyes:

    Has anyone narrowed down the updates that may be in question, im assuming its the .net 4.0 ones and not the 3.5 series?

    There are a ton of them and I am not sure which one(s) are causing it. It messes up Alien Autopsy as well as OSD and Alien Command Center, Intel XTU, 3DMark11 and some other things.

    I think, at least for my m15x .net 3.5 was needed as well for OSD and command center at the least.
