I have been receiving notices that Flash Player is discontinued, and that I should remove it because it's a security risk. Can someone explain why it would be a security risk to leave it on my computer?

Probably for the same reasons Windows XP or Windows Vista etc are security risks, no longer being updated.

Remove it. You can also download the uninstaller from Adobe to remove it. They also advise you to remove it as well.

An update back in January should of removed it from your system. Adobe was sending notifications to users to remove flash before January 2021, Besides Flash has been dead for years with almost every website moving to HTML5 anyways and plus it was always filled with security risks.

the KB4577586 update only removes the embedded ActiveX version of Adobe Flash Player (for those running Win8.x or any Win10 version including from RTM/1507 to current like 20H2). that update will NOT remove the NPAPI (netscape plugin) and PPAPI (pepper) versions of Flash as those can be removed separately with the EXE uninstaller from Adobe.

the upcoming Win10 21H1 release (when clean installed from a 21H1 ISO) is basically "flash free" (does not come with embedded adobe flash player at all)
