The Acer Aspire 7740 is a 17.3-inch multimedia notebook designed for people who want a lot of features for not a lot of money. This notebook costs $749 while still offering an Intel Core i3-330M processor, Intel GMA HD graphics, Blu-ray drive, and a HD+ LED-backlight display. In this review, we take an in-depth look at its performance and see how well it stacks up against the competition.

Read the full content of this Article: Acer Aspire 7740 Review

Related Articles:

Acer Aspire 8940G Review

Acer Aspire One D250 Review

Thanks for the review, it's interesting to see the Intel HD graphics don't deviate much in performance between the i3 and i5. Good to know that I'll be getting good performance no matter which system I get. :) I'm surprised though that this Acer got good marks, I thought they were usually at the bottom of the ladder in quality.

I have own a Acer before. My last Acer lasted me 8 years. I Love my new Acer. I use it for Work, school, and Play. This computer boots up fast. runs fast. lots of space for work and school and games. I play World of Warcraft It run Just like if I was on my gamer desk top. I work in EMS SO I do my my reports, MY con ED is done on line with the big 17" screen I see the Videos lot better than my old 15" and loads the video faster. Playing WOW the game runs fast very little lag if any. FPS is just a little slower than my desktop. By the way have I told you I love this laptop. has every thing I need, The price for this laptop is low compared to other laptop of the same built. This the best laptop for the price.

If you liked it at $749, how do you feel about it at ***$499**** (true, Staples, as of 3/29/10):

Reassured by the salesman, I opted for this machine over a similarly featured but a lot more expensive HP model. Now I have had my Acer for one full year.

I work it hard - 10 to 12 hours on weekdays and a portion of that also on weekends. I have a virtual machine installed and work most often on remote desktops. During this time, I have not had even the tiniest problem - no freezing, no unsolicited shutdown, not even once. Please observe that I load it heavily when I work, and it holds it.

The screen brightness, though, does not reach really to working outdoors. It is possible but not too comfortable. Even though the brightness of the screen is more than enough for any place indoors, it would need just a wee bit more for the outdoors. And the screen lacks anti-glare, so, in conditions of very bright light you will see the reflection of yourself and the apple-trees behind you.

The power button is a huge one. It is located right in front of the display and is too brightly illuminated. So, for me, it was quite distracting. But I am at large a little whimsical when it comes to the eyes. I covered the button with just a piece of a multipurpose tape. It still shines through it but is not distracting any more.

If you need a reliable wide-screen laptop machine, take this Acer. You really don't have to be scared away by the low price. It delivers what it promises and works like a champion.

As far as Acer is concerned I think you Americans are really getting the short end of their stick. $750 for this 7740 may sound good until you realize Singapore sells the 4741G for $700 that beats it at all fronts (14", i3-380, 2GB DDR3, GT 420M, 500GB)

    Thats a silly comparison.

BTW the 7740g should be able to accept a full HD 1080p screen like my 7738G.

When you get a full HD screen and two hard drives along with a bluray drive in your 14" machine you let me know.

Careful guys, Acer's international warranty is a great thing, though as soon as needed in Hong Kong, I was made aware by Acer that they count the warranty from the manufacturing date. Discussions do not help - not with Acer.
A friend who is Acer dealer confirmed me then that the RMA rate of Acer notebooks is among the highest in the industry.

A pity, nice notebooks but bad quality and lousy service.

purchased the Aspire in April 2010 as a discontinued model ($600Can)...was quite pleased with performance for the first year...then the problems began....it was doing wonky things and even though I had excellent virus and malware protection it it continued to act as though it was infected...full review by the experts and nothing found....still acting strange so restored back to day one which was a major PITA....ok for a few weeks, then the fan stopped working causing major havoc....but a check when the fan was replaced indicated no hard drive damage....well, 6 mos later and it's total HD failure....I have gone back to a Toshiba....just not impressed with the many issues that arose and its performance over time.
