    Hi guys,

Suddenly while copying some data to one of the partition of my external HDD, something happened ( i do not know what ) and after that a partition just died. i am not sure if that is the right word to explore. but now windows does not show the dedicated name and asks me to format the partition. i am not sure what exactly to do.

Most of the google search asks me to format the disk and forget the data .. a part of me would die to remove 230GB of some kickass stuff. :(

    Please help.

    The make : LACIE , 500gb .
i have attached two images, if that wud help. the partition "local drive G" is the corrupted drive. :(

There are some data recovery utilities you could try. I'm not sure if Recuva will work in your particular situation, but it's worth checking at least.

I would also run diagnostics on the hard drive to make sure that it isn't on its way out. You could also try accessing the partition from a bootable linux usb drive just in case. I doubt it'll work, but it's at least worth trying.

Hey tijo, thanks a ton for the quick reply.
so apart from running a recovery, i suppose i do not have much options.
i ll try finding a way out ,if not then probably formatting wud be the way to go :(

You will have to formate the partition to use it normally again, but if you're at least capable of performing a partial file recovery, you won't have lost everything. Like I said, also run diagnostics on the drive to make sure what you experienced is not a symptom of the drive dying overall.

Oh yeah, backup all the other data you have on the drive now, just in case it is really dying.

    tijo,

thanks for all the heads up.. i got backup from the other partition and planning to format the entire drive.
well, when i use disk management from vista, it gives me an error reading this "the format did not complete successfully".
shall i like use some third party programs to format my external hard disk?

thanks a ton for help tijo.

gparted (bootable linux partition editor) will pretty much do anything you want.
