As many of you know, of the default configurations available for the 8770w (and similar models), only the AMD FirePro M4000 card allows you to use the two DisplayPort outputs on the docking station as well as the DisplayPort output on the laptop itself. Now I've seen lots of talk about the various GPU upgrades that people have been successful with, from various AMD cards to just about every MXM Nvidia card up to the GTX 980m.

My question is pretty straightforward. Do any of these upgrades allow you to use all 3 DisplayPort outputs? If so, what is the highest performing card you can upgrade to that allows this?

I'm running the FirePro M4000 at the moment, and while it can drive all 3 of my BenQ XL2730Zs (1440p screens) at 144Hz, its performance suffers quite a bit with most games unless I put the resolution down to 1080p. Even still, its only able to run a few games over 144 FPS.

I'd love to get some better gaming performance if possible. What are my options here?

Hello not sure am the monitor side but here is something to think about. You would need to make sure you switch out the heatsink with appropriate one I.e if switching to Nvidia you would need an Nvidia heatsink and Quadro x bracket. if you buy get a gtx card with bracket included it would have to be replaced with a quadro x bracket in order to mount the gtx on the workstation heatsink hope that helps as far as hardware someone else will chime in on performance and scalability

Ok well apparently no one knows the answer to this. How about this? I was looking at the specs for the zbook 17 G2 and noticed that all the nvidia cards listed there as well as the amd card could run 3 displayport screens. So here's the question. Is the ability to run all 3 displayport outputs a functionality of the GPU itself or is there some other restriction imposed by the board? Example: The K4100Ms that come with the G2s allow you to use all 3 displayport outputs on the G2. If I installed the same card on my 8770w, (assuming I could get the card itself to work (I don't recall if this specific upgrade was tested, but that's irrelevant to the question)) would I be able to do the same?

    IMPORTANT!!
    Like DellSlayer said
: You need a Different Heatsink for AMD & NVIDIA Cards, I dont know if you need to have different heatsinks for Quadro and Geforce,
If you use any card at all, will require you to flash the video card only IF it doesnt gives any video or it doesnt work with a HP vBios for it, if it doesnt work, DELL Vbios work well aswell,

So in short answer: You can change the GPU, but try using an AMD one, so you dont spent too much on heatsinks, but if you want nvidia features, YOU WILL have to BUY a Nvidia Heatsink, or
the gpu wont fit well and will probably get damaged or burnt (it wont burn, those ****ers have protection for such things), also have in mind that having High End GPUs will generate more heat
that the computer can cool, (****ing HP with bad ventilation! but still love its boldness),

Well, ill keep you updated i gtg its 3am here.

Ok, also youll need a better power supply because some cards use more Watts than others, so get that in mind, test the card you bought if you get throttles check the power consumption and GPU Clocks, to see if goes underclocked because of the power its getting,

A 980M might aswell support 3 DP connections at 4k (idk if all at 60hz,)

Well my displays are only QHD so hopefully I'll be fine. My concern was less about whether the GPU could handle 3 displays but more about if the GPU itself was actually the limiting factor (not some aspect of the mobo I was missing). For instance the K5000M is vastly more powerful than the AMD M4000 but only the M4000 can output to all 3 displayport outputs on the 8770w (out of the default gpus available for it). I'm certain a 980m could run 3x 2560x1440 displays at 144Hz, I'm just not certain if something else would limit me from outputting to all 3 DP outputs.

I currently have the 200 (230 maybe) watt power supply. would the 980m require more than this?

Just posting for the sake of anyone who finds this in the future. I received my 980M earlier today and was able to install it successfully. Drivers run perfectly (after modding). Everything working very well. And YES, it can run all 3 displayports (albeit with some careful configuration). See here for details.
