is there a standard drive dell uses for the Alienware 17 r4 512gb versions? If so, which could I expect to receive?

No, it varies by what they have in stock st the time. It ranges between sandisk, Samsung, Toshiba and I’ve even seen some liteons.

Add SK Hynix as well. Samsung and SK Hynix are good ones. Others throttle at minimal load and have worse SSD lifetime due to increased heat.

Mine came with a sandisk a400 nvme drive. It actually runs pretty cool and doesn’t throttle.

Haven't seen any complaints from Sandisk users. Majority of the problems was on Toshiba drive.

    That's interesting
My new laptop has flagged as shipped so hopefully will find out soon

Is there any recourse with dell if I get one of the ones that throttle and how can I tell if it has this problem?

If you have got the service tag you can check Current config via alienware/dell website.

Okay I found the laptop and this is the info in the drive section:

    70KCW SSDR, 512G, P34, 80S3, TECHNICAL SHEET, XG5

Hard drive is clearly Hitatchi, the above doesn't mean a lot to me
