40 pin LVDS Connection for FHD Screen

Hi all,

recently, I bought a Lenovo Y580 with a 768p screen. I'm considering attempting to upgrade the screen.

The LCD connector has 40 pin slots, but only 29 of them are populated. My question is - does the 1080p screen actually use all 40 pins? Or will fewer pins also work?

Here is the hardware maintenance manual for the Y580: Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 | Lenovo Y480&Y580 Hardware Maintenance Manual V1.0 - Page 90

Scroll down until you see the parts listing for the LCD assembly. You will see two cable part numbers. The cable marked "Single" is for 768p", and the cable marked "Dual" is for 1080p (well, would work on either). The part number will be 90200854.

You would probably need to contact Lenovo Parts to order this part.

As for the actual 1920x1080 display, you could either order a standard-gamut 15.6" 1920x1080 display here, or you could probably order a 95% gamut 1920x1080 display (AUO B156HW01 V.4 or V.7) which will have the same connector type and location. The 95% gamut displays can be had for only around $5-$15 more.

On the other hand, is there such a thing as a very high quality 768p panel? I am not so much worried about the resolution as the image quality. I would love to have an IPS or IPS-like 768p panel to install on here.. .that'd be awesome!

 

There apparently was a 15.6" 1366x768 display that had a 578:1 contrast ratio, but still meh viewing angles compared to 15.6" 1920x1080 TN panels judging by photos.

It was in this review of the Y570 that I saw this display used. But unfortunately, it does not note what model of LCD it was.

(Note: The Y570 did not always come with that display. This review here on NBR shows it using a poor display with a 148:1 contrast ratio.)

I have also seen a 3D (120Hz) 1366x768 display with what appeared to be decent contrast, and an unknown Samsung laptop that a guy who I don't know had.

EDIT: I've also seen a Lenovo V570 around campus that seemed to have the same display as was in the NBC Y570. (Note: The V570 in my local Best Buy had a worse display, so it did not always ship with that display either.)

EDIT2: Apparently there were 7 different LCD panels used in the Y570, according to the hardware maintenance guide

Keep in mind that when ordering an LCD from laptopscreen.com, you will get a compatible model but you may not get the exact model.

Unless it denotes "exact model number" below the listing title.

 

B156HW01 V.4 (V.7 & B173HW01 V.4) is always the exact model,
same as some unique IPS panels (X220, iPad, etc)
but yes you are correct, if it doesn't say *EXACT MODEL* you'll get whatever is available on hand.

Also we try to stock the best choices of the compatible screens (LG preferred),
so quite often customers who had a lower grade panel will end up with a higher-grade "compatible" panel.
(Simply because the prices for each kind are very close if not identical for us)
