17" Lightweight notebook for general use

    Hi All, looking for a laptop for my family member

    General Questions


    1) What is your budget?
    $1000 EDIT: $500 (oof)

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?
    a. Netbook; 10" screen or less
    b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12" screen
    c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
    d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen OR
    e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

    3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
    General Use/ Microsoft Excel/

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
    Portability is a plus, lighter, thinner

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
    Probably not, but discrete gpu is a plus

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
    More the better

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

    3-4 years ish, pretty much as long as a $1000 can last

    Notebook Components

    17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
    SSD
    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
    yes, dvd minimum, blu ray a plus


    I've recommended the new Dell XPS 15, as the non touch is 999.00. As for 17" I'm unsure of options right now. I don't believe they want to go sager/clevo route unless one is thin/light enough

    The above won't happen. 17" and 3-4 years lifespan and you're looking at 5 pounds to lug. And it's going to be a bit thicker to handle a discrete GPU and keep it cool.
