Getting sick of my hot and sluggish HP i7 and looking to pick up a new laptop.

Looking for i5 - decent video card (as long as it wont contribute to heat when not being 'utilized') - good screen

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?
    d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Surfing web, photoshop, music, irregular gaming.

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both? Moving.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
    Dirt 2, Battlefield.

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
    3 hours minimum.

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
    Would like a nice screen, maybe 1600 x 900.

    You're in australia - maybe consider Affordable Laptops for a Clevo/Sager P151HM1/8130? A little over budget at 1200$ but packs a GTX560...

How does a GT 540M rack up compared to my current HD 5650?

Pretty well, the 540m has a slight edge over the 5650 for performance. What laptops are you looking at?

Don't really want to go with an i7 - turned against it. Was looking at an i5 with preferably a 1600 x 900 resolution - which the Np5160 has, and the B5130 lacks.

That i7 is a dual core, not a quad like yours. And i believe the B5130 also has an upgrade option for a 1920x1080 screen.
