Holy crap I didnt even know that GTX 1080 without extra power existed.

You will need a massive overhaul on the cooling to let that card run. If it does run at all.

will not fit in M18x, card is too long. it is not a full power 1080, more like a stronger 1070. M18x heatsink needs dremeling to get it to fit thanks to power phases.

Oh my lord, did anyone know that this existed?????????????? The closest 1080 I thought we had was the Zotac/Gecube editions. But, as @Danishblunt / @Raidriar stated, cooling is an issue, especially in the 18, and it would be like an OC"d 1070 anyways. This might work in the M17 R1, and if I had the money, I would definitely be testing it out.

The max GPU config in that I believe is 980m SLI, a single 980m runs around ~$350-400 off eBay, and performs similarly to a 1060"m"

    It seems very tall.

Not to hijaak but I have a question on cards with extra power connector. Could someone above my paygrade use the open MXM slot to provide an "adaptor" with cable that could add that power? I'm thinking even in that config a 1070/1080 wouldn't draw as much power as 2x 980s.

An user of this forum already made such a thing, its a small PCB that plugs into another MXM slot and has a couple pads to solder wires for the positive rail and ground, then you use a cable that mates into the GPU plug and its literally plug and play, the thing is that it might need more mods than just that, you can pull around 150Watts from the MXM slot, and some 1080's are limited to 150Watts, depends if there is the need to fudge more control signals than only providing more power, because if more power is all you need, scrapping the mobo and soldering wires to the positive rail and some ground location will net you the same result, a bit more ugly.
