Default GeForce 8400M GS - Idle Temperatures

    Hi everyone,

If you have a GeForce 8400M GS in your Vaio please take a moment to help us collect some information. This thread was inspired by @sinstoic's very useful thread in the Dell forum. It might be beneficial for us to do one of these for each of the G84M & G86M variants.

If you have a FZ go here instead. If you have a AR go here please.

After you vote please answer the following in a reply. Thank you!

    1. What model Vaio?
    2. What is your idle GPU temperature (in Centigrade)?
    3. What software was used in measuring your GPU temperature?
    4. What was the temperature in the room during measurement?
    5. What video driver was used and where was it obtained? (If applicable please indicate if you've over/under clocked the GPU as well.)
    6. What operating system was the temperature measured under? 32bit or 64bit?
    7. Please indicate the power scheme in use when the temperature was measured. Was Powermizer enabled or disabled?
    8. Where any modifications used to obtain the temperature? (e.g. Software Fan Control, Hardware Modification, External Cooler, etc...)
    9. What has been the highest temperature you've seen on your card? What application/game was used when this was obtained?

Powermizer (Nvidia link). I think it was also available in the 7xxx series (possibly earlier under a different marketing name). It decreases/increases the GPU's clockspeed dynamically when needed with the goal of conserving battery life.

I *think* there were issues with their SmartDimmer software and the brightness functions on Vaios.. There's a couple threads on it somewhere around here..

Hmm i think there is cause for concern for people who voted 85°C+ as their idle temperature.

Not necessarily. People who voted 85+ as their idle should also report their CPU temps as well. They could have a dust-clogged fan, and a higher than normal CPU temp would indicate that...

It's a setting in the Nvidia Control Panel. Should look similar to this:

Faster drive would also increase the overall case temperature a little as well. I wonder what OS they were using.
Please take the Nvidia GeForce Temperature Polls:
8400M GS (SZ series) 8400M GT (FZ series) 8600M GT (AR series)
