I called a Sony Centre yesterday to ask about stock for the TZ32 model (top model TZ in the UK). The rep said they only had a demonstration model left in stock and wouldn't be getting any more as "the TZ41 or something is going in a month or two"...

First of all this is a great thread, thanks all for the hard work!

The main thing to be aware of when you're buying memory for a laptop (I mean apart form obvious things like speed, latency etc) is what it's made of when you compare 3gb versus 4gb.

If the laptop has only two slots of mem, 3gb will be made of 2gb + 1gb, and in that case, although about the same amount of mem is actually accessible by the OS (3gb against 3.3 or so), it will NOT be dual channel (different memory size in each slot), hence your ram will be slower than 4gb (2x2gb) in dual channel in the same laptop. Even 2gb (as long as it's 2x1gb and not 1x2gb like in the TZ where there is only one slot available) may be faster than 3gb if you don't use the extra 1gb, as it will be dual channel.

If you have room for 4 slots (not many laptops offer that), then 3gb may be made of 1gbx2 + 512mbx2, in which case speed will be better (but not power efficiency! ).

So let's watch out for the new serie, and see how many slots are available. If it's 2 slots (most probable), don't buy 3gb, but 4gb or 2gb depending on how much memory you actually need/use if you want best performance.

A frienf of mine just bought a Dell 1530 with 3gb thinking he was all clever not to buy 4gb with only 3.3gb useable by Vista32, not realizing that he was hugely sacrificing performance...
