I bought this one and it looks fine. It is not metal though. And also I personally like to make 2 holes in it for screws.
But you can search better caddies on eBay. Pay attention they must be Sata-Sata. And the must have side cover with DVD label or at least connections for any side cover. So you could put your OEM side cover from blu-Ray/DVD Rom.
If you will see just flat side cover don't buy it.
Hey! Didn't I drill those holes for you? :P

What are the 2 holes for ? Is it for the screws that i remove from the laptop ?

Also how about this one ( almost double the price )

The way caddy's are setup is that there's only the SATA connector that keeps the HDD in place. This allows for wobbling. So, two well-placed holes allow you to use the HDD mounting screws to keep it sturdy to the caddy. That should be mentioned in the tutorial, if it's the tutorial I'm thinking of.

    Ok

but if i make a new partitionn on which i want to install Win can i save alrdy installed programs, bcuz id rly like to keep my copy of the pre-instaled Sony Vegas... and i fear if i do a clean install of Win that i will loose vegas, even if i have the files copied to a external drive...

And sth else... anywhere i read about a fresh install of win7 it says that this is a very radical solution...
isn't there anything else i could try prior to this to improve system speed?

does the external drive 500gb 7200 rpm on the caddy as a second HDD work faster than one connected through usb 3 ?

Hi all, first post here, and I've looked through / searched through a buncha threads on here but I wasn't able to find an exact answer so... I apologize if this has already been mentioned / discussed, I was just hoping to get pointed the right way hahah.

    1. In regards to throttling (at least on the i7 quadcore w turbo-boost), it appears that when the laptop is plugged in with the battery pulled out, the laptop remains locked to energy saver mode with turbo boost completely disabled. Has this been confirmed with other owners? My battery recently died, so rather than keeping it plugged into the computer, I pulled it out but notice that the laptop has resorted to throttling and locked the laptop at this speed.

    2. Since I'm in the market for a new battery, it's come to my attention that the windows 7 64 bit software combined with the vaio battery check program has made aftermarket batteries a non-option. While looking around the internet, I've read examples of bios reflashes and disabling the ISPManager.exe etc but it appears that the the Vaio F series will still reject generic batteries, which leads me to wonder if Sony has hardware-locked this series of laptops (VPC-F series) from accepting generic batteries?. Has this issue been confirmed with other members?

Thanks in advance, great information here as always.

    Hey James,

Thanks for the info! Definitely gonna look into C3 and C6. As for the battery, I was able to also find on another website that linked to that HK supplier at the portapower limited website, but it seems that the infamous "SonyBiosPatch_20100925.exe" is nowhere to be found on that page. Plus it seems like that website is the only place that has it hahah. I'll take a look and see if I can find that biosupdate somewhere else.

Wouldn't turning off c3/c6 states mean that you're actually turning off turbo boost?
