If this works, it will be the best thing ever. Apparently it will let you power a 2.5" or 3.5" drive from the hub over a single cable, but will our Vaios be able to power the 3.5" drive over eSATA?

Also I'm on a Vaio F12 M0E. Can anyone confirm that it does support power over eSATA?

The only thing I have slight concerns about is the data/power connection being molded into a single piece. I know for notebook drives that the power and SATA connectors are always in the same place, but is this still the case for 3.5" drives?

    Thanks.
This is very old news. I've been using that Powered Esata cable on my F11 for the last 18 months. It will only power 2.5" drives.

Note this link from February last year when the powered Esata port was first being discussed. There were enclosures by then, the cable followed a few weeks later. Official Sony VAIO F Series Owners lounge

Well I never claimed it to be new news, but thanks for confirming it will only power 2.5" drives. Going to have a rethink on this.

Might just get an enclosure with an external power supply that's easy to get into and swap the drives as and when I need them.

    Hello! I am back again!
I did it and I don't regret it!!!
I drilled and cut holes on my vaio's bottom.
3 1 cm circumference holes around the fan, 4 0.5cm over the cpu and 3 over the GPU.
The results so far. The noise is much much less.. I think it's got to do with aerodynamics. The amount of air that I can feel entering the new holes is remarkable. I can leave a piece of paper and it is being sucked.
The temperatures are a median of 1.5 to 2 degrees lower only though.
So I will do something more.

I managed to find an old heatsink made o copper that is slim enough to fit between my desk and the laptop cooler I have. I need to find a way to attach 2 or more heatpipes on it with which I will try to touch the copper of the vaio's heatsink. Only touch not fix or weld.

I remind you that my warranty is void already.

There will be less air drawn over the rest of the motherboard though. The chipset CPU doesn't even have a heatsink and requires all the airflow it can get.

(edit) And memory and hard drive, that's why those vents are there. There's less airflow without the holes directly below the fan because the air is being forced to go past more stuff that it needs to cool.

Yes I have seen what you are saying. I have a big laptop stand for that reason with double fans so for me it is not a problem. The fact is that the thermal characteristics of this laptop are by design flawed for me. I come from an hp centrino laptop which was like a fridge. I know i7 is a boiler...

Apart from all the above I can easily close the holes if I want to move it elsewhere (i made little plastic doors...).

I don't recommend my approach to anybody with a valid warranty!!!!

so to sum it up holes = lower noise, lower temperature but with an external fan or base as a mandatory requirement!! If you go the extra mile you can make an external heatsink... :-) But it is a little too much..

    Take care!

@everyone who wants to buy Eprescard to USB 3.0!
My eSata slot nearby expresscard is working badly when I use USB 3.0 flash drive in it. My wireless mouse freezes sometimes! Does it use alot of power??!
Looks like USB 3.0 Transcend drive in Expresscard uses more power than usual USB 2.0 drives. Also I can't use that power cable from additional USB to Expresscard because my flash drive Transcend USB 3.0 16GB (need to update sign) is little bit wider than usual USB wires. When I used USB-to-USB wires 1 of them (longer up to 70 cm) did not work at all with even wireless mouse adapter while another short one (10 cm) was working with flash drive but it gave me only USB 2.0 speed ! I gonna buy USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 extension cable. Guys, don't bit please, let me buy it as cheap as I can

EDIT this one is for 11.28$ or best offer

Expresscard can only partially power a USB 3.0, which requires 900mAh. Expresscard USB 3.0 adapters either require a 5V power supply or a USB 2.0 cable that can get power from a 2.0 port to fully power the 3.0 port. The expresscard power by itself can power a small flash drive probably but I'm not sure how much power a 16GB requires - I mean for it to run at 3.0 speeds, not just to be powered and run at lower speeds like 2.0. In case this didn't answer your question, you should note that I seem to have temporarily misplaced my secret Ukranian decoder ring.

Ok, you seem to be happy with it and it's your computer so it's up to you of course, but I have to say that that really wasn't a good idea. I see MelodyMaster already commented about the airflow and cooling of the other components, which is what I was about to write. While it's possible to improve cooling by drilling holes, it should only be done after careful study of the airflow and with calculated precision. No offense meant, but the fact that you chose to cut 1 cm holes around the fan tells me that you do not understand what you are doing in this matter. I would cover those holes back up if I were you.

I understand you want to lower your temps and the fan noise, but I just wanted to make sure you realize that your temps are perfectly normal for your stated room temp of 30C. Since you have this whole cooling system rigged up, really the best way to increase cooling of your laptop without damaging it would be to set up your laptop stand and cooler/fans to blow air off of something frozen from underneath. That should get you more than your 1-2 degree advantage from the holes you drilled that are putting your other laptop components at risk. That's my opinion on the matter, but if you're happy with the outcome of the holes and don't care about future consequences or an early end of life of your laptop, then of course it is yours to do with whatever you want. Good luck.

I clearly understand and thank you for your considerations. I know that I am no aerodynamics expert nor a mechanics major (just a cs major but it's irrelevant :-) ).
I had a laptop (the vaio we are talking about) that was practically unusable because of the high noise, high temp. I have accepted that it might get damaged in the future if I continued to use it as it was. I wouldn't like not to try and improve it.

I stated before that I don't recommend it and that I had no warranty where I live.

So I left it on all night!!! The first time I do so.. In the morning idle temperature 43 Celsius. Ambient: 34 Celsius. Used it heavily for 40 minutes just to end up at 59 to 64. Way below 70++!! The laptop stand is providing cool air to every component which was without the holes completely isolated from the fans. On the one hand I don't have the designed airflow inside the case. On the other hand I have a much more powerful air stream way cooler than the default one, on every every component.

I should also mention that today I added filters to the holes so no dust.

Really thank you for all your considerations! I know it is a dangerous situation (not so much but it is).
