Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
I received my VGN-FW190EEH on Friday afternoon and have been playing with it without any sleep. I am very happy that I did not go with Z series.
But I have 3 questions for you guys:
1) My InterVideo WinDVD does not work. I don't know what caused this. I don't think that I deleted any necessary file while cleaning up the bloatware. I guess one of the old program I installed caused this. You may say "how come?", let me explain with an example: A very similar thing happened to Internet Explorer. It did not open. Later on I found by chance that when one of my old XP software (iFinger) is open, regardless of whether it is opened in compatibility mode or by administrator, the Internet Explorer does not open. Anyhow, may be a similar program causes a problem for the WinDVD. Though I must admit there is a big difference for WinDVD-- it opens, but cannot play DVDs. It gives the following error: " WinDVD MFC Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." There are some solutions I found in some forums which did not work.
So, has anyone else encountered this problem and how did you solve it?
2) This may be a weird question so please excuse me.
I don't know how I can explain this but in my Toshiba laptop there is a button on the lid that you can slide and then release the button which really helps you to open the lid.
In this laptop there is no such button + when the is lid closed, it is flush to the keyboard-- there is no gap or whatsoever to hold and open the lid conveniently. There is a little piece that barely protrudes from the top surface of the lid just above the motion eye webcam which seems to be serving a purpose when opening the lid. Well, I was extremely uncomfortable when I opened the lid from by holding from that piece because every time I tried it was inevitable to touch, even worse with the pressure you apply, to the webcam. Apart from this, I did not like opening the lid by way of holding the top part of the lid (the part that webcam is located) because, I don't know whether it goes the same for your laptops but the only part I have found flimsy in this laptop is this part.
Anyhow, if you have any special techniques I will really appreciate if you can share. Right now opening the lid is a pain in the *** for me!
3) I could not output my laptop's screen to my 1080P HDTV via HDMI because Sony's software offered me to choose 720p because 1080 option was grayed out and not selectable. I did not expect this. What is the reason for that? Do/did you have the same problem??
BTW, Hicolor is insane!
Thanks,
mg428
PS. I've just found out that the button i tried to explain above is called "catch". So what I meant above is that FW does not have a catch.

Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
Can any owner of a FW11 confirm whether or not the SD/MMC and MemoryStick readers are two separate Windows devices with two separate drive letters?
I seem to recollect two different card reader icons in Explorer, one for SD/MMC and one for MemoryStick, but after I've made a clean 64-bit Vista install (with manual driver installations) all I have is an SD/MMC drive visible by Explorer and Disk Manager and no sight of any MemoryStick device...
In the Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have:
* Ricoh Memory Stick Controller
* Ricoh SD Host Controller
But, under Disk drives apart from the HDD I have only this:
* Ricoh SD/MMC Disk Device
There should also be something similar to "Ricoh Memory Stick Disk Device" here, am I right?
OTOH, under the category Portable Devices I have this:
* R5C822
The above device identifies as a Ricoh card reader device in Google searches, so I'm thinking that maybe this device should be the missing "Ricoh Memory Stick Disk Device" under Disk drives that I've mentioned and that it's wrongly identified by Vista, am I right? If so, does anyone know of any working Vista 64-bit drivers for this MemoryStick device?Last edited by bgd; 6th September 2008 at 07:31 PM.

Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
^^ Ok thanks, that's what I thought, the same should apply for the FW11. So, anyone that's managed to install the Memory Stick reader in 64-bit Vista? If so, what drivers did you use? Apart from this device, everything else installed just fine on 64-bit Vista...

Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
Question. My FW says it comes "pre-loaded" with Spider-Man 3 and other TV shows. Anyone knows where they are?, I want to delete them, but I haven't been able to find them, even with visible hidden folders and files. :blush:

Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
I've been having a lot of problems when browsing the internet where the computer just clicks and goes backwards.
I was able to fix it by loading the latest Synaptic driver here:

Just posting in case anyone has had the same issue.

Re: Official VAIO FW Series Owners Thread
You guys might have it configured for an specific function by tapping on the upper left corner, maybe. You can disable those functions if you want. At least on my FW the touchpad is Alps not Synaptics. Oh well.
