Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
I ended up changing my SZ power ribbon connector and since then touch wood i've had no issues. It was obviously that part of the hardware that was causing my issue. I'm not sure if i really needed a new one but i bought the part anyway (it could have been a loose connection and the other ribbon had a whole in it that a screw went right through, i'm not though sure if this was normal). I bought what is a generic connector part and probably will buy the genuine part from Sony at some point.

Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
Did any of you guys with SSD installed in your Sony SZ had to change any settings to your BIOS? (like updating it so the TRIM function to work in Win 7)
I have not had any luck. Maybe this function isn't support on the SZ--given how Sony locked the BIOS from the VT-x stuff. My Sony VAIO is a VGN-SZ780.

Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
Trim has got absolutely nothing to do with the BIOS.
Its built into the driver and OS -> so thats where you have to look.
On this note, intel toolbox trim works fine on an intel ssd - but doesn't change a lot, just a slight bump in consecutive read/write after a lot of writes...

Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
How do I get to the fan to replace it on my SZ1XP/C, I see some helpful links to pdfs and things in the disassembly thread but do I *really* need to get right in and take the mobo out to get to the fan? And how might the fan be attached to the mobo? It seems like there is a second heatpipe going around the fan from a chip on the mobo... Will this prevent me from removing the fan? I'd like to know before I start digging inside any further than taking off the keyboard and palm rest... thanks.

Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
The heat sink handles heat from both the processor and the Nvidia graphics processor or the chipset, I forget which. If I remember right, the heatsink comes out easy as pie from underneath. However, the fan is a hassle and requires the upper plate to be removed, which means quite a lot of screws to reach it, and that is if you can fanagle it out (not for the faint hearted). It's safer and easier to remove the board, but that means a lot more work.
A 2 second search of Google would have given you this:

Re: ~Sony SZ Owners Lounge~
Yeah, thank you for that link, I did a Google search myself which is how I found this forum (this thread with links to disassembly pdf's etc). I see that my best option is to take out the mobo (there's physically no other way of getting the fan out). The CPU heatsink is, as you say, easy as pie to get out but the other is behind the chassis and I haven't ventured that far in yet. The pdf that you linked (which is the same as I found) doesn't specifically say anything about the fan, I can see that it comes out with the mobo but I don't know if it just clips on or if it is more permanently attached.

I was slightly put off by the wires that run alongside the top of the chassis but I think all that is related to the wifi and will come out in one piece. Putting it all back together again afterwards is a different matter, though.
I have ordered a new fan so will venture some fanagling when it arrives. It doesn't work now so I have nothing to lose, it's served me very well for over 5 years.
Thanks for the reply.
