Thread: Which SSD???
-
23rd July 2010, 12:57 PM #81
It might shave a couple of seconds of during game loading or copying large files but it will be hard to notice I think.
Some reviews show noticeable differences with the Force 120 dominating the Intel (like Techreport and Storagereview).
But other reviews shows minor differences or even the Intel faster than the Force 120, like here:

And keep in mind, none of these reviews are performed on laptops.Last edited by Phil; 23rd July 2010 at 01:36 PM.

Hmm....I'm not sure whether I should keep it or not now.

Re: Which SSD???
I'd keep it. You got a killer deal. And it's 160GB instead of 120GB.
Upgrade when there are real performance benefits. Like when Intel G3 comes.
At that time you can still sell your G2 for more than you bought it.

Techreport review of the Corsair Force 120. Quite disappointing results actually.

Re: Which SSD???
Yeh, I think I'm going to keep it. Unless the F120 is going to be significantly quicker then I think it would be best to keep it just for the extra space and to avoid the hassle of buying and selling. Then upgrade to a G3 later this year without losing money on mine
and in the mean time I'm going to get an extra 2 and sell them on and maybe get an i7-920XM or just pocket the money.

Re: Which SSD???
You will absolutely not be able to tell the difference between an Intel X-25M drive and a SandForce SF-1200 drive. I mentioned this in a previous post in this thread. The only way to tell the difference is to run a bunch of benchmarks. And even then, the two drives trade blows in different benchmarks.
Even if you could swap out your Intel X-25M SSD for a drive using the SandForce SF-1200 controller, I would still tell you to keep the Intel. If you had a drive SandForce SF-1200 drive in-hand, I would tell you keep the SandForce. But you have the Intel - so take it, put it in your system, and be happy. The difference will be so unnoticeable to you, that it isn't even worth driving down to the post office to do the swap.Laptop Madness (w/unboxing pics): | 17 Second Boot - POST to Desktop | SSD Boots Windows 7 + Load 27 Apps in 1 Minute | SSD vs HDD Direct Comparison - Identical Drive Images

Re: Which SSD???
Yeh thanks kent, I'm going to keep it, I've opened it already. If there is no real world gain then I don't see the point in losing 40GB. Plus the reason I bought my 80GB X25 in the first place was because of it's great reputation.

Re: Which SSD???
This is very interesting. At the moment, I am torn between the Corsair V128 and the Corsair F120. Here's the issue:
Corsair F120
+ Outperforms the V128
- Less formatted capacity (111GB)
Corsair V128
+ More formatted capacity (119GB)
- Performs slower than the F120
Taking the Intel 160GB G2 vs. F120 performance argument into account, I am assuming that I won't be able to tell the performance difference between the F120 and V128, correct?

Re: Which SSD???
Correct. You probably won't be able to tell the difference by actually using your computer. They are so close in performance, and such an incredible leap beyond mechanical hard drives, that you won't be able to tell.
The only way to tell is to run benchmarks, and I'm guessing that bought your laptop to do other things besides just run benchmarks 24/7.Laptop Madness (w/unboxing pics): | 17 Second Boot - POST to Desktop | SSD Boots Windows 7 + Load 27 Apps in 1 Minute | SSD vs HDD Direct Comparison - Identical Drive Images

Re: Which SSD???
Thanks again for clarifying the potential performance difference between the Corsair SSDs, Kent.
