1.) Who or What is Clevo? (back to top) 
CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc.
They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.
Established in 1983, as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), they sell barebones ranging from laptop to portable computing solutions for both AMD and Intel processors. Clevo is one of the world's most preferred ODM partners and markets their products in more than 50 countries, and have established service centers in the USA, Germany, Britain, China, and Taiwan.
Their main notebook range includes:
* PortaNote (denoted with an D*** in the model number) - Desktop Replacement and Multimedia systems, with features like support for desktop CPUs and multiple hard drives.
* MobiNote (denoted with an M*** in the model number) - Thin and Lightweight systems with superior build quality and performance.
* Widescreen (denoted with an W*** in the model number) - Similar to MobiNote series but with a widescreen 16:9 display.
* Rugged (denoted with an R*** in the model number) - New rugged and professionally designed.
* TabletNote (denoted with a T***/TN*** in the model number) - Tablet computer systems.
* LCD PC (denoted with an L*** in the model number) - Portable Desktop all-in-one solutions. What has Clevo done to distinguish itself?

 How Do Clevo Notebooks Come to You:
1.) When Clevo ships out their notebooks, they are all in barebones* form.
2.) The barebones are shipped to a handful of Clevo importers/OEMs (example for North America: Sager, Pro-Star, Eurocom) that custom build, rename and brand Clevo models (e.g. Sager NP9262) and sell them to end users directly, and through resellers. They also distribute the barebones to various non-importing OEMs.
3.) The non-importing OEMs that buy the barebones from the importer/OEMs then install the custom (yet standardized) components that a customer would choose (CPU, HDD, RAM, etc.)... and may even re-brand the notebook with a new coat of paint, adding stickers, and other customizations.
4.) Then you [the consumer] receives it, which has a warranty through the vendor/reseller you purchased it from, as well as a warranty through the Clevo distributor/importer (for the barebones only).
Note: Clevo does NOT deal with consumers directly, for purchasing or support. The consumer must go through the vendor first for service/support.
* Definition of Barebones: (from Wikipedia) A barebone computer is a half-assembled platform that consists of a case with a power supply, a motherboard preinstalled into the system case, and a cooling system. Barebones are usually designed in a non-standard way and cannot be assembled out of widely available hardware parts. The purchaser of such a platform only has to equip it with a CPU, RAM, hard drive and additional input/output devices depending on his/her own needs. Why buy a Clevo notebook?
1.) Price (Bang for the Buck): Since Clevo notebooks are sold by so many vendors, they are usually very price competitve (along with competitive service/support) as opposed to notebook models that are exclusive to only one vendor (whom can charge whatever they want)
2.) Quality (Hard as a Rock): If you ever have a chance to try out a Clevo notebook (especially the high-end models), you will find that they have superior build quality and design as compared to mainstream notebooks.
3.) Software (No Crap/Bloat-ware): When you purchase your custom systems, you can choose whichever OS you want to install (or have installed for you) and the OS is clean installed w/o extra trial/un-needed/useless software installed along with the system.
4.) Upgradeability (Made Easy for Users): Clevo current high-end models are designed to specifically have their components (CPU, RAM, HDD, internal cards, and even the videocard) easily accessible for future upgrades.
5.) Uniqueness ("It Ain't a Dell"): Subjective to personal preference. But having a custom high-end notebook that the masses cannot identify is pretty 1337. Videocards available (for high-end models with MXM Type IV) :

Thats a lot of videocards that's supported by one MXM Type IV slot. To spot a Clevo (for fun): Within the previous years’ models, the majority of Clevo notebooks have a few distinct things in common… ...the metallic circle on the top-center, above the LCD where a built-in camera is.

- BANGHO ______________________________________________________ 4.) Making a Clevo Purchase... (back to top) 1.) Do Not Buy on Impulse: Make the purchase with a well-thought out mind. 2.) Research (Lots of it): You must seriously research about any big item purchase (such as a notebook computer) by following the FAQ (here on NBR), use resources for looking up businesses ( BBB, resellerratings, WHOIS to look up the online store's info, etc). Also try to find out if the time that you need to purchase a system, if there is an upcoming model, check to see if it is worth it for you to wait. 3.) Know the Alternatives (if any): It is good to know (by doing research) what other alternatives are out there. They can be used for comparisons, as well as a choice if a Clevo notebook does not meet your needs. 4.) Know Who You Are Buying From: This guide is a small part in knowing who to buy from. It is highly recommended to directly contact your potential vendor to inquire about any questions that you might have. This will give you a good idea about their service/support, as well as see if they are right for you. 5.) Warranty ("Extended warranty?.. How can I lose?"): Most to all Clevo notebooks should have at least a 1-year manufacturer's warranty for parts and labor. Most vendors might even include their own add-ons to that warranty (extra years of parts/labor warranty, lifetime tech support, etc.) without paying for it... included in purchase. Extended warranties are sometimes useful and sometimes not. They will depend on the owner's preference to get one if: (1) they are not too technically savy and might want some piece of mind, (2) they are going to use the system a lot, such as bringing it around everywhere... giving it more wear and tear, or (3) they might want to reap the benefits of an extended warranty that could include an upgrade path for the system that would cover the cost difference of upgrades. 6.) Price (Most important factor?): As you see in the new guide, the pricing for most of the vendors are quite competitive with little to no differences in pricing... since most will price match or negotiate. Look at the warranty and service/support you will get... that is what is most important when buy such an item. 7.) Make the purchase: Be happy with what you buy, regardless of what anyone else tells you. If you did your research, you should feel confident about what you bought. (There's nothing worse for a consumer than "buyer's remorse.") Note: Make sure to give your impressions about your system here on NBR, as well as post your reviews at resellerratings.com (even if its just a couple of words). ______________________________________________________ 5.) Conclusion: Taking care of your notebook (back to top) Gaming/performance notebooks are a new thing, you must realize that you have to take some extra care of them over typical mainstream notebooks:
1.) Battery: to maintain the longevity of any rechargeable battery
- you must NEVER overcharge it [especially for long durations of time] by keeping it plugged into AC
- when it reaches 100% you should unplug it and let it discharge to at least under 50%, then plug it back to power
- OR you can just charge it to 50%+ and remove the battery and store in cool place.. not the fridge [remember to use it occasionally 3-4 time a year to charge and discharge it].
2.) Heat: to prevent a healthy notebook from overheating*
- ALWAYS use the notebook on a clean, hard & flat surface
- RECOMMENDED to be used on a notebook cooler... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000 or ZM-NC2000
- check your fans underneath occasionally (at least once a month or two) for any dust clogs [clean them out with Q-tips and air cans/compressors]
- ALWAYS monitor the temps (CPU, GPU, HDD, etc..) to watch for fluctuations, which would indicate overheating by dust usually
(for Clevo notebooks) use the Fan Toggle to switch all fans to Max Speed when gaming and such.
* 3.) Overheating (time to clean out the dust):
If you are overheating... usually any temp over 90C degrees is bad.
when was the last time that you cleaned out the fans and vents thoroughly...?
if never, then thats why.
1) remove battery
2) remove/unscrew the panels on the bottom of the notebook to get to fans and vents (if possible)
3) use flashlight to look through vents for the dust (if you cant see the light on the other end, then the vents are clogged up)
4) go outside, get some compressed air (cans or compressor @ ~ 50 PSI) and give the vents a good airing out all directions (concentrating on the vents)
.... you might want to brace the fan blade(s) when airing it out (with anything to prevent it from spinning out too much)
.... or use short bursts (1-2 secs) of air instead of bracing the fans.
5) go get some Q-tips (cotton swabs) and swab the fan blades and the area around it
6) then go do a second airing with compressed air (all directions again focusing on the fans and vents) to push out the dust that was dislodged from the Q-tips
7**) Now go use the flashlight again and look through the vents (shine the flashlight from the fan, you look through the other end) for anymore dust clogs.
8) Then start up the notebook... and let the fans cycle up (use the Fan Toggle at max speed if your system has it) to push out any other dust that might have been stuck.
If all goes well you should be able to close up the notebook and...
you're done.
**repeat this step until its cleaned out.
Thats pretty much it.
Just make sure to do this every two-three months... it should take about 15-20min per cleaning if you want to be thorough.

Kudos on the great info!
Another one you can add is KillerNotebooks ( www.killernotebooks.com). They seem to run more expensive than some of the others, and seems to be more of a one guy operation, but he seems to trick them out specifically for gaming performance. He's also really active on the tomshardware forums and elsewhere, and people seem pleased by his level of dedication to customers and others.
I actually just (finally!) ordered myself a 5760 from FlawlessComputers, so I will hopefully soon be joining the club of Clevo/Sager owners myself. |
