High Pitched Noise from new Pavilions

I got my dv6130 2 days ago and immediately noticed the whine!

Here's how to get rid of it:

1. Download RMClock from http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_215_bin.exe

2. Fire it up, click the 'Management' link on the left, and check the box for 'Run HLT command when OS is idle'

This will cause the RMClock application to restart, and once it does, the noise is gone!!

I am a bit dubious about that being the solution due to us AMD users having this problem also. My dv9094ea have the high pitched noice when scrolling etc. I have located mine to right above the scrollplate. It sounds like a handshake from a modem.

But perhaps there are more noise problems with these notebooks.

A squeaking noise when scrolling or minimising a window could be the GPU. A 9800Pro in a desktop I have does that. A few years ago someone said the cause was the GPU doing blitting. Whether that is correct or not *shrug*

I tried the RMClk program and it fixed the noise. It is happening because the cpu is being undervolted to downclock it when the system isnt under a load. Althoguh my temp for the cpu core went from 28-32c idle to 36-40c idle. im guessing it wont change the temp under a load being it would have upclked then anyway. would a constant 40c be ok though with it being up clocked constantly?

It is not caused by the voltage, but switching between power states. If you wish to verify that yourself, force the processor to run at the maximum voltage and multiplier: the noise will not stop. However, ensuring that the CPU does not drop lower than the C1 state will stop the noise.

I watched what that program changed. It changed the multiplier. At idle it runs at 6x and is underclocked to 1ghz instead of staying at 2ghz. So im not sure what you are talking about power states. Either way, with it running at 40c idle is that going to hurt anything even though it runs up to 60c under a heavy load like 3d gaming

I don't really understand what is this high pitch noise....sounds like a dual core problem.

Its not a duo core problem its a moblie thing. When its downclocked at idle it makes the noise and when its runnning at full the noise isnt there. It also happens with core duo and single mobile cpus.

RMClock did the trick. Thanks. Any idea what this will do to battery life? Also, have we determined whether there's any variation between individual laptops? I just got an HP DV6000 and -- until RMClock -- it made the high pitched whine. Is it worth swapping it for a new one, or do they all make the same noise?
