There are some other threads here about installing XP on Sony Vaio FZ models, so start there. But since the SATA controller on the FZ models is from Intel, you can get it there. Look in Device Manager for the model of the hard drive controller and then go to Intel's website.

But that aside, why on earth would he want to do a repair? The existing OS is running just fine. And a repair is going to affect the existing OS. It would do NOTHING to affect the posters ability to install XP in the second partition. This person's issue is with installing a SECOND OS in dual boot mode.
Plus since the original OS is functioning, why would you direct this person to do tests for a crashed disk? Obviously the disk is NOT crashed.

-My apologies then if my stock answers seem to vex you. It is not that this is the only remedy I am aware of in diagnosing a hard disk problem. I just SURMISED that a hard disk crash is the culprit of gfender's problem which is stated by the following lines, "[b]ut when I put in the XP CD in and reboot, it says that there are no hard drives on my system". Such non-detection of the hard drive is one of the symptons of an aging near failing hard drive as according to this link. Note that I just surmised, I didn't say that it is the final prognosis of the gfender's problem.
-Further, the reason why I occassionally use my "stock answers" because it is phenomenological. I myself have experienced it with my notebook's hard disk. I consulted a credible computer technician and resulted to buying a new hard disk since hard disks have a so-called "shelf-life" depending on the usage and care. By the way, my "stock answers" were his (computer techinician) SOPs.
-I am just trying to help here or suggest some OPTIONS in dealing with gfender's problem. I never claimed that my replies were of authentic cures to gfender's problems. I posted those replies with the purpose of sincere assistance by offering some viable alternative measures - which I believe is the "credo" behind this forum's purpose. Moreover, I admit that I posted and relayed the same "stock answers" in some threads and to my friends too which helped them, in my own small ways, in one way or another.
-I am sorry if my hard disk breadth of knowledge, neither the computer technician whom I consulted too before, doesn't seem to be at par with yours. My sincerest apologies then.... I will try to post my replies then in an inquisitional tone if it pleases you; so as not to equate my replies to futility (^^).
-Lastly, "To assist is to rectify; to insult is to demean."

Re: Need to Install Windows XP on my VAIO.
Comrade,
My point was that it appeared you answered with the exact some response you used in another thread before you even bothered to completely read this one. The OP, here, had CLEARLY stated that the first OS installed was running just fine, indicating that the disk drive was not failing. Yet your reply was all about a failing drive, sending the OP off on a wild goose chase.
Yes, the error message could have indicated a failed drive, but not in the presence of the fact that the drive was working perfectly with the existing OS in the first partition. Doing the "chkdisk r" would only affect the known running OS. It wouldn't even look at the second partition where the OP was having the real problem.
Sorry you took such umbrage to my comment. I just wanted to point out that instead of using stock answers to any disk related issue, that you should take a moment and examine all the facts presented and then decide if the response is warranted.
BTW just so you know, a "no hard drive" message being reported by an XP installer disk, is not only symptomatic of a failed drive. These days, it is more often an indication that the drive controller is a SATA one, since XP has no native drivers for that type of drive.

-"No hard drive" may or may not indicate a failed HD. I never claimed its congruence. However, a "no hard drive" msg. is closely linked to a failed hard drive ONLY IF the hard drive has considerably been beyond its maximum shelf-life, again, depending on its frequent type of usage and care (i.e. bumps, etc.).
-BTW, I am using XP and I am actually using a native IDE HD not SATA
-Nice conversing with you, btw
-Pardon, my soft part... I am not just really used to lewd language like "what on earth, etc." cheers!

I totally agree. And the fact that the original Vista install was still running fine would lead me to steer away from this, at least in an initial diagnosis. And that was the only point I was trying to make.

I assumed that, and that's why I added the note. It is quite a common error message these days when folks are trying to install XP on newer machines. I wanted to arm you with that info so you can help out the next time this issue pops up elsewhere.

Lewd? Jeeze, that's lewd? Strong maybe, but lewd? Ya want lewd, trust me I can give ya lewed... big ol' grin.
We're good. I wasn't trying to dump on you. Sorry if it appeared that way. It was obvious to me, that you understand hardware a bit and I was trying (in a somewhat ham fisted way) to prod you into looking at the WHOLE picture when helping diagnose these things. I have been at this a VERY long time. And try, where I can, to impart to others some of the diagnostic skills passed on to me over the years.
