P-7805u CPU Upgrade Question

So I've been considering upgrading the CPU in my P-7805u, but am unsure of what kinds it can accept. I know there are a number of dual-cores that will fit, but is it compatible with any quad-cores as well? If not, what dual-core would you suggest?

I tried asking Gateway support, but they epically failed by sending me a canned response telling me that laptops can't be upgraded. -_-

I Would Suggest: T9400, T9600, P9600
Some Others: P8600, T9550, T9800, X9100

Any socket P 1066 FSB chip should work, probably the best choices are the T9600, T9800 or P9600, The original cpu is the P8400 which is a lower power 25w TDP chip, the P9600 is also a 25w TDP and would ensure there are no cooling issues and probably not have much impact on battery life. If those issues aren't a concern the T9800 is about the fastest chip you can put in that is reasonable. It will take the X9100 but there is no overclockability with that chip and its got an even higher 44w TDP.

The P9600 is probably the best choice since I play games for long periods of time sometimes and I'd have concerns about heat issues at 35W or above.

However, would the performance difference between 2.26Ghz and 2.66 be enough to make an upgrade worth it? Also, where would you recommend purchasing the processor?

It's not just the speed difference, Tsuki-no-Hikari -

the P9600 also has 6MB of onboard cache while the P8400 has 3MB.

Yeah the doubled L2 cache will add a good bit of performance as well. Quite honestly though it depends a lot on what you're doing with the computer. If you give us some idea of the software you use we can give you a better idea of how much of an improvement it would be. Also you might consider using the laptop for a while as is and see what you think of it.

Could somebody tell me what hardware is upgradeable on the 7805u? I'm talking more specifically things like the things that traditionally were not upgradeable in laptops like graphics cards etc.

I always thought that most things in a laptop were not upgradeable other than the HDD and RAM

most laptops the cpu, optical drive, hard drive, ram, wireless card are upgradable. The P7805u is the same, though there's room for an extra mini pci-e card beyond the one in use for the wireless, and you have an open bay for a second hard drive. The 7805's graphics are not upgradable, they're soldered to the motherboard.
